Hello,

I've treated my new mare for worms and lice but she's still scratching. I'm sure she had pin worms when I had her - I wormed her two weeks ago and haven't seen any worms in her droppings since. She doesn't rub all the time - it seems to be only at night. She's got straw bedding - didn't have any bedding previously. Could it be a straw allergy? I've never seen any lice but the hair on her dock made it seem like she'd been rubbing and she was always desperate to roll - even with tack hence why I thought it was lice.

Any ideas?

Some horses can just get into habit of scratching - as more they scratch the more irritated the skin gets, and becomes a circle of behaviour.
But is possible straw could be irritating - could you try using shavings instead? & if you've not done already, maybe try washing the area where she's scratching, to make sure the skin is clean & may soothe the irritation.
