Has anyone else had this? Two young Connies out on on a trashed winter paddock about 1 1/2 acres - lots of bare earth but grass is growing but sparse and mostly short nipped to the ground although some blades are a couple of inches long. They are on this as both looking rather well and don’t want any laminitis by putting them on the other fields which are lush and green! They both come in during the day for about 6 hrs for some hay and a snooze and they have a slice or two each of hay in the field over night. Both have developed sore patches on their lower lips at the front (the bit that goes all droopy when tired ?) and also 1 round the edge on both sides. Not bleeding as such but skin off and pink/red showing
There are no buttercups or other nasty plants out there, no trees etc, just a boring bit of paddock enclosed on three sides by post and rail fencing and electric fencing on other side. The ground is very very dry at the moment and rough so I suspect it’s a combination of trying to eat the short grass and lips dragging on rough ground and the side sores from maybe trying to reach under the wooden rail fencing for more grass? Younger skin not quite hardened off? Am putting sudocrem on when they come in but other than that does anyone have any experience / solutions ? I have managed other lami ponies in short grazing for years including another elderly chap on exactly the same land/set up at the moment (but smaller area as he does get lami) but these sores are new to me. Obviously don’t want to stop turning them out
