Hi all

This week, my mare has developed sores on one side of her mouth in the corner where the bit sits. Nothing has changed and the other side is absolutely fine. Someone said it's likely that it's due to her lips getting quite dry? Could this be the case? It's only seemed to have happened this week as the weather in the south has gone balmy! If so, are there any treatments you would suggest? Onviously will not be riding with a bit for a couple of weeks!!

Id be wondering why its only on one side..is the bit even in the mouth or is there something wrong with one side? Could it be something silly like shes stabled where the sun hits one side as she sticks her head out? are you sure you are not using one side more that the other and making the bit sit wonky?

As for treatment, id be reluctant to put anything on if it might react.

Thanks. It's all even and I've only really been hacking this week...which means I'm terrible for having ultra long reins...so not really much in the way of contact at all.

Haven't thought about the sun hitting one side...will check that today! Just seems odd that it's happened all of a sudden when she's been absolutely fine in the same bit for months

A couple of horses at my yard are also suffering with this and none of their riders are heavy handed or have changed bits. Have a look at Bit Butter for when the mouth looks more healed and apply generously before putting the bit in.

Just a thought - is she up to date with her worming, sometimes worms can cause sores on their lips if there isn't an obvious reason.

Sometimes when the coat is changing the skin on the mouth can become dry one of my horses gets flaky skin in this area at this time of year, it never looks sore though just dry

Thanks. Just got some bit balm today so giving that a go...and also riding bitless until it's completely healed. It's so odd that it's happened!
