my pony has recenty sufferd large red sores on his tail. it looks as though the top of the tail has fallen off! he does not suffer from sweet itch, he has not had a tail bandage on for over a month but he had his tail pulled by hand about 6 weeks ago. could this be the cause? troughtoncarla@aol.com

Has he been rubbing it? Some will rub their tails sore in a similar way to ponies with sweetitch but only the tail. Once they have healed a bit try spraying the tail with fly spray in the late afternoon before midges come out. You will need to do it everyday! One day off and tail will be rubbed raw again! (Ive been there!!!) A fly rug with a tail guard could also help.

My boy has been rubbing his tail recently because he was too hot with his rug on after all the rain. I use itch cream from global herbs and that seems to help. Leaves it a bit greasy though. Vet said just to wash the area regularly. Hope it heals up soon. T took about a week to heal once he stopped rubbing.
