Evening folks :)

Sorry to start another weight question, but I wanted to gather some opinions.

I have put Barry up for sale, and today I had a message from a chap who is 13 stone.

I don't know how heavy this is in respect to Barry's size! He's a 16.1 hh 9y/o TB (at the chunkier end of the TB scale, but obviously at the lighter end of the general horse scale!). He's about 550kg. The man is interested in hacking and doing some gentler hunting.

Photos added of him plus me riding him (I am 5'1" and about 9 & 1/2 stone) for perspective.

Opinions greatly appreciated. I know there's a difference between a 13 stone sack of potatoes and a 13 stone balanced rider, but just want thoughts on it as a general situation.

Chocolates offered for replies*

*I will eat these for you :p

It would be a no for me I'm afraid. 'Gentle hunting?' No way. If he says he's 13 stone he's probably 13 stone something then you have to add 2 stone for tack, boots and cloths so that is 15 stone plus.

I'm that weight on a small 15.3 Irish tb x Irish sport horse thing aged 13, weight about 560kg to 575kg...... He looks like a sort of warm blood, so a bit heavier than yours. He does up to elementary dressage, schooling medium. We don't jump as I can't jump (seem to end up throwing myself off....it's a skill;))

As far as I am aware he doesn't struggle with me and is motoring quite happily!

It honestly depends on if you are comfortable with it you make the terms it's your horse you are selling.

I'd personally say he looks like a fit strong young horse and probably be fine hacking, why not let the guy come and try him and see how Barry goes.

Let him come try him and let the horse decide :) In theory... he "should" be fine. But that's all and well in theory. I have saw heavier riders and similar horse combinations go well, and some (particularly with very novicey riders) be awful. Just bear in mind as mentioned above, he may have been conservative about his weight.. If he is closer to 15stone, add in the tack...

Only way to tell is to get him out to see him, and how the partnership work/dont work.

I've never sold a horse in my life, but unless you'd put something in the ad asking about riders weight, the fact he has mentioned he is 13st would set alarm bells ringing. And as Wagtail says, he's probably being conservative, plus you have to factor in tack etc. On a TB. So from novice me, it's a no I'm afraid

Absolutely fine.
If a healthy 16.1 hh Tb couldn't carry a 13 stone man, then most of the male professional riders would be left mucking out stables. 13 stone for an average man isn't fat or even overweight.

Agree - so long as he is telling the truth! And male professional riders are good, fit and well balanced. The only thing you can do is let him come along and then if you think he is too big, say that you don't think your horse is suitable and maybe he should be looking for a middleweight.

I was selling a horse I felt too big and heavy for, and then a lady came to try her (and wanted to buy her!) who was ENORMOUS! I mean fat. Luckily someone else had been to see her so I could truthfully say that, and said that they had first refusal............................ selling horses makes liars of us all.

Thanks for the input guys :)

My boyfriend is 13 stone and 6', so totally agree with you there! He rode Barry the other week (he can ride, but is the first to admit he is like a sack of potatoes), and didn't look big on him, but that was a one-off.

I don'k like the idea of him coming out to see Barry and then having to tell him no because I think he's too big. I suppose the other reason is because he's got quite a sensitive back, and I don't want to think he might be made sore :(

I do quite like the idea of the male mucking out force though :p

Agree. How much do you think somebody like WFP weighs at 6'whatever he is despite being slim? Will Funnell? Geoff Billington? Would love to know how much professionals weigh as I am sure there are some who are around the 14 stone mark without any problems whatsoever.

Yes I know they are excellent riders with good muscle tone and balance, but I don't agree you can write off this potential purchaser based on a phone call. He could be a really sporty 13 stone of muscle!

In the current market and depths of a wet winter you are doing well to get a response to the advert.

I've had quite a few actually, and have two people who are coming to look at him at the weekend and another two who want to arrange a viewing :)

Plus three "is he suitable for a novice?" queries...

Its probably around what William Fox-Pitt or Andrew Nicholson weigh. They both ride 16h TB types regularly. My husband weighs that and is 6'4", he doesn't look at all big on my 16h ISH..

I would let him come and try the horse then put him off if you aren't happy. Worrying over the size of a man you've not even seen yet is not worth it. He could be a great home for the horse..

Wfp is 76kg and 6ft6in!
Nick Skelton is 77kg
Peter Charles is 78kg

their horses seem pretty ok with them!

Another one! Carl Hester is 81kg!!

Impressed - how on earth did you find that out?! So they're all around or just over 12 stone. Skinny beggers aren't they!

Just got my hands on each of them and stuck them on some scales ;)

No.... All of them competed at the Olympics and have been weighed and measured! So I just typed in their name and their stats came up!

Some of them are horrifically light weight! Laura is only 56kg!!!

I recently sold my tb. She was 6 years old and 16.3hh, but pretty lightweight. The lady who bought her was 5ft 10 and around 13 stone - I was a bit skeptical about it all, but they look a perfect match - the horse looks happier than ever with her new rider and they are both now getting fitter anyway, so they'll just get better!

I don't see an issue with the weight if horse and rider are both happy and suit in this situation.
