I'm feeding my pup 3 times a day slightly more than the recommended amount on the bag (it's a very good dry dog food) when he went to the vets the other day they all commented how good he looks, the bag says at 5 months to pretty much 1/2 his food intake but I'm worried it won't be enough for him.

Do I follow the instructions or watch his weight and condition?

Absolutely no help on feeding, but OMG what a gorgeous puppy! And your other dog looks fab, the jumping picture is incredible!

Lovely pics :) I have cut my two pups feeds from 3 to 2 a day. I would be interested in others views too as wondering whether at 6 months they can have Adult food or should they continue on Puppy food?

I ignore feeding amounts and feed by eye. Puppy food is mostly a marketing myth: check the ingredients of the puppy versus adult food: the difference is negligible. Carry on feeding what you currently feed and adjust if the pup gets fat. They're growing so fast at this age that extra food, as long as you're not over feeding madly, is fine. Just lower the amount if you see a noticeable difference.

Once he starts having bigger walks, he will probably need the larger amount of food.

This.

Our 2 yr old Rottweilers still get 3 meals per day, because otherwise their dishes would be overflowing.

Your dog looks in fab condition...id say continue to watch weight,by feeling ribs/body covering ribs, and probably switch to adult food at six months, twice a day.
Re quantities,I'd phone the breeder to check in and ask her what she recommends for your high energy breed.

Beautiful pup, great photos and love your other dog - what a ping! Feed by eye, if they get fat and you cut down it comes off in days so don't worry too much. Ours tend to wander from a bit chubby to a bit lean over a week.

You have to feed the individual dog. My Springer pup gets more than the Lab and Staffy put together. He gets a higher quality food too, and is still a skinny dog. I also go by pooh consistency, too hard and they're probably not getting enough, runny and they're possibly overfed.

Thanks everyone that's exactly what I thought, he looks so good at the moment the idea of cutting his food in half just doesn't make sense to me - obviously he will need less energy to grow but gradually he is walking more and he rarely stops.

Just seen my uncles dog and he is feeding exactly by the bag and his dog is too skinny, his head looks massive for his body.

Thanks for the lovely comments about buz he is a dude - although just found some really stinking cow poop to roll in. So just had a shower!

It depends on the breed of the pup. If a large breed they should stay on puppy food until 18 months.

If a smaller breed a year, it's to do with calcium levels ect. In feed and also the size of the kibbles.
