ok, well she is 2yrs 7 months and next year I want to start lying on her possibly sitting on her. Do you think this is too early to be looking for a saddle - should I wait until I am actually sat on her and ready to ride, which will be end on next year or the March 2011? I would like her to be used to a saddle before I start leaning on her etc.

I was thinking about a small cub saddle just to get her used to one until I am ready to start sitting on her, but as you can tell, this is all fairly new to me and not sure whether to get cub saddle, or an adjustable synthetic one straight off

The thing is, she'll grow allot more over the next 6 months alone and buying a saddle, even an adjustable one might not work out next year.

I had this same issue with my boy when he was just 3 (now 4.5 yrs). I bought his first saddle today. I think you need to figure out whether you could really use the saddle now or whether you could wait a bit; the longer the better. In the mean time put saddle cloths and other things on her back to get her used to having something there. I found it was impatience more than anything with me! Is there a saddle that you could borrow just to introduce her to something like that?

well first off i have got my roller. so will do things with that then long rein etc. and use saddle cloths etc. i do have 2 saddles, one is quite a heavy leather one, but this would fit better to my lighter synthetic one-a thorowgood cob saddle.

i see what your saying about them growing again, so probably best to wait until sometime next year for that then, if i can! so in the mean time would a litte cub saddle do any justice?

when you say cub saddle do you mean one of the children ones. if so i wouldn't think there was any point as they are so light. you would be better of with a numnah and roller. or could you not just put annie's saddle on her just for her to get use to.

thats what i was thinking about the cub saddle, prob not worth it. i could put annies on, but worried as of course it wont fit hardly as they're such different sizes

My 2.5 yr old just wears the adult horses saddles. It doesn't have to fit particularly well as there's not pressure going on it.

He gets in on whilst having his dinner and sometimes if going for a walk.

He's also been sat on once- sadly for him he's just the right height for me to swing my leg over whilst standing on a block. I've done all the 'leaning' on him bits and he's not bothered. He thinks it's unsusual but since it results in a carrot (even if it is from above) it's a Good Thing.

He does have his 'own' saddle as my current project is a similar shape so I've bought him a WOW saddle. It should fit piper later. If not I'll just sell it on and get him another.

i wouldn't worry about it not fitting if it's just to get her use to it. obviously if you are going to get on her with it then it wouldn't be a good idea. there is a tack auction tonight you may pick up a cheap one there. how is annie getting on bare footed?

oooo wheres the tack auction too? pm if you like
