i have a 15.5 inch thorowgood with fish.. wide.. i have the thickest fish in but its still sitting a bit low, can i do anything with it, i just brought it.. it dont move on him (swing) hes not complaining.. just seems tight when i am sat in it around the front... i can get 2 fingers under the pommel...

Hi,
If you bought it new, then have your fitter pop out and check the fit. It is usual for new saddles (or newly flocked saddles) to settle.
The fish are a bit pants, you might just need to take them out and have a slightly narrower gullet in - again, your fitter will be able to asses this and advise you. 2 fingers space under the pomel isn't alot, saddle might be a smidge wide or tipping a little.
If you put your fingers under the front when you are sat in it then it is going to feel tight - you are trying to shove your hands under the weight of you and the saddle! No saddle is magic, it will press on the horse along the paneled area, that is the point.
It is good that your horse isn't showing signs of discomfort, but it sounds like it is worth having someone check the fit of it, better to nip any issue in the bud now rather than wait for problems with your boy.

thankyou for your reply.. its not the changable gullet one....its second hand... can the trees on these saddles be ajusted? may be worth getting someone to look at it....

if it isn't adjustable then the trees can be tweaked a v little by an experienced saddler, or the flocking can be redone - that can improve the fit alot.

Don't try and assess fit with you on top. Girth firmly or press hard on the pommel and see how the panels seem - if the panel feels snugger at the top edge than under the tip of the points then it probably is too wide. No idea if it can or should be adjusted, I only work with wooden trees.

If the saddle is otherwise a good fit then lifting the front with a nice padding system like the Mattes correction pad (trimming the shims to that there are more under the points are fewer higher up, I can direct you to YouTube videos) can work short term, but long term the tree should really be the right width.

Usually a saddle that is too wide will lift at the back in rising trot, are you sure yours isn't?

A thick numnah does not help in many cases - yes it provides more padding but it doesn't correct the fit in most cases and can cause more harm. Bet to try and assess what is actually wrong, how much it needs correcting. If just a little too wide the a thicker pad will lift the front slightly more than the back, which just might be enough, IF all other aspects of the saddle fit correctly. Check front to back balance, any lifting at the back or any other movement before deciding that it might do temporarily.

thankyou.... its not lifting or moving at all.... i have a prolite wither pad would that work for now... he has cushings and changed shape, he was a xwide at one point, hes now i thought wide, but must be m- m/w..
