I have a Warmblood that has a very fleshy mouth & a very large tongue.
He is very sensitive in his mouth, but can be extremely strong when he wants to be!!
When I bought him at first, he was a monkey for leaning & I was told that I would have to regularly change his bit as he gets used to them and can learn to evade them very quickly!!
I have persevered with him and am now, 18 months later, schooling him in a loose ring, french link snaffle!!
The problem is with jumping/xc, he can be very keen and can get very strong!! He is happy as larry jumping in his snaffle but he can get hold & I therefore have no brakes!!
I have tried the NS Universal, on its own, still no brakes, as he managed to get his tongue over the bit, even with a flash!!
Off the recommendation from an instructor I have tried a leather curb strap with the Universal but he hates it, tosses his head, like a mad man and backs off it!
He does cross his jaw too (Back, teeth, saddle all fine) so i am thinking maybe a Grackle Noseband, for jumping instead of the flash, but what bit would you suggest? I have also tried the loose ring Waterford, but with no joy, as he got hold of it with his teeth!!!!
I really don't want to start with really strong bits, as I think that is what his previous owners have done!
