....But would someone be kind enough to explain:
1- The reasons behind balloting
2- Who gets balloted (random ?), why and/or how... ?

(As not in practice here or in U.S.)

Thanks !

simple, too many entries.
it's supposed to be random, but it isn't exactly. this is my understanding, roughly in order of balloting - most likely to be balloted:
those with errors on their entry, those with more than about 5 horses (!), those without a special sticker/those on a day ticket, then special stickered, then those the secretary particularly wants to let in, then super special/priority sticker (which cannot be balloted).
it leaves a bad taste when pros get 5 in, and amateurs get 1 balloted... but i can see why they do it.
there used to be a rule that Intermediates and Advanced couldn't be balloted if running same day as Novice at same event, Novices had to be sacrificed, but i'm not sure if that still applies.

Thanks kerilli

My question was really out of cultural interest as the concept of "too many entries" doesn't seem to apply anywhere else.
Do you mean to say that most pros will NEVER get balloted sort of thing ? Does this have anything to do with the fact that in the UK, pros and amateurs compete together in the same classes as opposed to what's in practice on the continent or in the U.S. ? (Being thick again

no, the pros do get balloted, but if they enter 10 and get 5 balloted, that still leaves them with more than the amateur that had 1 balloted...
i didn't realise pros didn't compete against amateurs elsewhere. i really like it actually, i think it's one of the best things about the sport.

Well about the sport IN THE UK.
I know that most riders in the UK don't realize that... One of the reasons I find a cultural interest in asking !
Agree with you, prob a good thing, stimulation, emulation and all... But here and elsewhere, the fact that pros and amateurs don't compete together has to do with prize/money endowments. Def not the same in pro and amateur classes.
