But i am at a show tomorrow, with Tommy and i really need to get his beige :eek: feathers white! I have tried diamond white shampoo it gets them a bit cleaner but not white white!
Can i use fairy liquid on them or will it hurt/sting him? Vanish soap? It works well on stains on clothes :confused:, but loathed to try it on horse?

I wash my horse with washing up liquid and it doesn't hurt him - let's face it, it is designed for humans to put their hands in, why would it hurt a horse? ...I have also bleached Ari's tail with clothes bleach (weak solution) to get the pee stains off!
 
Have you tried chalk? My old share owner used to wash Ellies legs then just as they were nearly dry rubbed chalk into the white bits. Once legs were fully dry she just brushed the excess and had lovely white legs.


I'm lucky that my youngsters white legs come up a treat just from washing with water

I have actually just bought some chalk, but didn't know when to put it on!
Ok so i will wash them and when they are nearly dry i will apply the chalk, then brush off when fully dry? It's worth a try, thanks
 
Hiya! I have a similar problem & was fairly unsuccessful earlier this week with both Tesco Value shampoo & 'Mane 'n' Tail' Shampoo. I can't seem to get right down to the skin.

All the cobs at Appleby are washed with washing up liquid in the river & they come out sparkling! I used to use this as a child & must say it works well. Never had a horse irritated - after all, it's been tested for use on human hands.

Someone else told me to use baby bath ( rather than shampoo) & lather it up well & leave it on for a while before rinsing. This worked quite well on a feather-less grey TB.

Haven't tried this, but someone told me to use chalk or talc & mix it up as a paste to apply. When dry, brush off. I've also heard of a white hairspray which can be brushed or washed out afterwards. Think I may give that a go!

I have used cowboy magic whitening shampoo in the past with good results. I also use show white paste (made by gold label) and I have had brilliant results with this.

Someone I know with a traditional cob uses net curtain whitenener on the ends of feathers and tips of tails but i wouldnt dare try this on my cobs clipped legs incase it hurt him!
 
Why don't you search the forum for those 1000s of posts you mentioned above??

As previously said ....... Daz - test patch first though 24 hours before so you are a bit late this time. Scrub into white patches/feathers, leave for a couple of mins and wash THOROUGHLY.
 
U se a combination of things. Warm water for definate. Cowboy magic whitening shampoo and Equine blue rinse stuff.

I find keeping them clean regularly makes life easier when you are going somewhere.

Another vote for chalk paste! Leave it on and brush it off 10 mins before you are due in the ring! I'll be lathering my welsh cobs socks in the stuff later this evening!
