That's a complicated question. And the answers could be quite extended. Basically it is a problem with the way that a horse metabolises starches and ultimately sugars. The take too much into their muscles (possibly due to a problem with the way insulin works) then store it as glycogen but in abnormal forms and quantities. This results in muscle discomfort and even damage over the long term. Symptoms can be quite wide and basically cover typical 'back pain', tying up symptoms. Diet involve cutting starches and sugars as low as is possible and feeding 1lb of oil for every 1000lb of horse. The hope is that the horse will alter its metabolism to use oils as its primary energy source rather than sugars and reducing the amount of sugar that gets into the muscles.

Are you concerned your horse may have it? If so it may be easier to describe your problem and see what the forum come up with.
