Can't seem to do right for doing wrong :(
Daughter's pony had a little knock at camp, looked like a little over reach but was on back foot, told her to just keep it clean and dry.
Walking in behind him the other day realised it hadn't gone away but looked all crusty and yuk.
So. Poulticed overnight mainly to break down what ever was crusted over it, which all came off, and then popped on a dry poultice the next night, just a bit of yellow serum oozed out that time.
Vet was there the following morning, he looked and said, that's fine, just give it a wash in hibiscrub and pop a bit of gamgee over it when he goes out to keep it clean. No heat or swelling, so no worries.
Did all that but it looks to be cracking more, and it's really sore, he hates it being touched - he's not lame and still no heat or anything, but still ...
Anyway tonight rightly or wrongly I decided he would be better off with a thin layer of protocon on it and turned out with out it covered.

Any inspiration. Could take a pic tomorrow I suppose - it 's kind of in the crease between fetlock and heel, and is a sort of horizontal cracking, sore, down to the skin piece about 3cms long and 1.5 deep maybe?

Get this treated immediately.
I had the same problem with my horse last september and have only now (10 months later) got him scab free.
I ended up getting scrapings tested, penicillin injected etc as every now and then the whole leg would swell up and he'd go lame.
not trying to scare you as it isn't serious. just a complete nightmare.
the only thing that has cleared it up with my horse is Fuciderm.
trust me we tried EVERYTHING!!!
hope it isn't the same thing, but it is how it started on my horse and it spread to every leg.

Sounds like probably mud fever. The damp ground/grass (if you've got any!) could well have caused this. I would bathe with Hibiscrub and get the scabs off and then cover well with possibly Dermogel or greenoils. This should stop the dirt getting in and aid healing.

Well that's what I thought, but for the fact that we are currently living in a desert.

He did acquire this tiny little injury at camp, where there was at least some grass. But it was dry?!

Dont supppose pony has much feather or anything? My tb x cob has to have his feathers clipped off as he gets mites and this happens on his legs. he had an injection from vet and cured it now just keep his feathers short and washed regularly and he is fine. Your pony may have got it from camp though as it is contagious.
Hope you get it sorted soon

they also live in bedding so muck out stable completely and disinfect it then re bed down!

really does sound like mud fever - horizontal cracks, which can ooze stuff out, yellowy scabs, tufty clumps of hair. I have tried everything to prevent and treat the damned thing, and can highly recommend pig oil and sulphur - clears it up withing days. Hope that helps. sm x

i know i have posted already, i think im outnumbered by the fact everyone thinks mudfever but dnt get complacent we thought and treated mine like it was mudfever for ages but turned out it wasnt, and now he is much happier its totally sorted than just being managed. and like you say being so dry unlikely to be mudfever!
