My yard is right opposite the entrance to my OH's farm, near Taunton. I drove down the drive at 6.10 this morning and saw 2 vans parked outside the entrance to my yard. I took the registration numbers which are

R271 MWJ
R431 DWS

Two men jumped over the gate and drove off in these vans. Nothing has been taken and horses were all OK, but they had picked up a headcollar from the yard and left it by the entrance. I telephoned the police who were actually very helpful. One of these registrations doesn't exist and the other is registered to an estate car.

So once again, don't want to scaremonger but please be on your guard!

Yes, I'm glad I managed to get the numbers, was kicking myself for not following them or something, but then what would I have done if I had caught up with them? I tried to ring OH, but he wouldn't wake up!!! I still feel quite shakey about it now actually.

An old guy down the road from us (in his late eighties at the time) came home to find a car parked outside his house burglars in his house. Due to his own frailty he he didnt disturb them. He just let their tyres down and then drove down to a neighbour to call the police! Now that was quick thinking!

Recently in the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire area there have been many sightings of two cars, Land Rover kind of things i think, taking pictures of peoples horses, possibly later to come back at steal them. A few horses have recently been stolen in the Wiltshire region, i'll try find the number plates of the cars seen.

This seems to be tied with what you experienced, as its in the same sort of area.
Found the advert kind of thing; not sure if this is what you saw or anything:

There have been 3 sightings of 2 suspicious men with eastern european accents photographing local horses. This could be a steal to order gang. The men have been seen at shows, events and even in the owners fields taking photographs. They have been seen white reg N253 XAJ and red land cruiser. Police are treating this suspicious so please contact the police urgently if you see anything.

Not to scare you or anything, but I think it might be connected possibley :/

And also witnessed in Devon and Somerset but mainly Cornwall, is a red land cruiser with a reg beginning with X. Varies between there being 2 men or 2 men and a youngish lad. At the start of June, 17 horses were stolen within 24 hours in a small area of Cornwall, after these men had days before been seen at a large local show acting suspiciously (they had no horses but the land cruiser was there and they were there).

Well done, oofadoofa. You did your best and following them may have got you in more trouble. I would be very wary for a while, though, as be aware that they may come back, although probably unlikely now they have been seen.

Makes me nervous because, as you know, I keep my horse near you and the yard is not exactly high security. The YO has a buzzer system for when cars/people come in and out, but there are no cameras or alarms and people are generally not around between certain times.

weve had the silver transit, they were 3 guys asking about horses and land, rough as they come, the what i called leader, had a gingery moheckan,. all irish

I thought the 17 stolen horses in cornwall were all part of the hoax thing that was going on, i haven't heard anything about these 'thefts' and we are out competing every weekend.

Yes, it was part of the hoax.

Thanks for your warning and speed in getting the registration numbers oofadoofa.

To some of the other posters, please, do not drag up all this old rubbish again. Thankyou.
