Hi there, my lovely mare has become very opiniated/stroppy under saddle over the last few months despite nothing changing in her routine, we have weekly lessons etc and I have owned her for a long while, perfect in the box and teeth, back, saddle, physio checks all done regularly. Only thing that has changed is that I've been adding good glug of soya oil twice a day to her feeds as she dropped weight a bit in the winter, I know its clutching at straws but has anybody else experienced a similar problem with soya oil (her energy levels haven't changed). The 'experts' in the yard tell me soya oil does not affect behaviour in any way!

It shouldn't and I haven't heard any other reports. Is she coming into season? The spring grass is coming through as well.
Is she getting enough to satisfy her appetite? I only ask this as a couple of Mares on the yard get very stroppy when they dont get enough to eat. I do to so I put it down to a female thing.lol

Hi, four days off the soya oil and my old mare is coming back!! Asked in local saddlers/feed shop today and they said that they've heard of a number of horses whose behaviour has changed after been fed soya oil.

I hate the stuff and now won't use any feed with any kind of soya in it. Easy to breed mares quit cycling properly, had stroppy beligerent horses, and open mare were making bags. Not really the greatest thing in the world for mares. Had quite a few other symptoms and now have just ditched it completely. If your looking for an oil type thing to feed, whole flax or stabalized flax is so much better.

Hi Terri, good to hear from somebody who has experienced problems with soya oil as well, now I know I'm not going mad! Thank you.
