Any failsafe ways to keep the fine hairs on long ears tangle free? Even if I comb through daily, he gets tangles and hates me doing them. I end up cutting out tangled hair as easier than wrangling wiggly dog. He is out in fields a lot and extremely active - often gets burrs etc in them. He doesn't like me spraying mane and tail on them and tbh the spray isn't targeted enough for just the bits that tangle.

Rest of him is tangle free just the bllimmin' lugs.

Definitely not a show dog - working stock. Good call on clipping them - I'll do that. Thanks!

Snood or spray/soak your brush/comb first before using rather than direct onto ears. You can also pour into a smaller receptacle then apply like that if he doesn't like the skooshing.

You could try a Tangle Teaser instead of a comb if you don't want to clip them.

My parents Welshie has his ears clipped - it looks fine, and saves a lot of detangling!

A solocomb is fabulous for spaniel ears.

I second clipping or trimming, if you do it carefully it looks nice and smart, but doesn't stop them looking like a spaniel. I also found using a detangler spray helped as long as the dog isn't an ear-sucker (years ago I had one who used to like to fall asleep sucking the end of an ear ).

I trim the insides and backs fairly short. Cut the outside level with the ear leather. And then add layers to the fluff on the outside. They’re still wavy spaniel ears, and don’t look too trimmed.

They still pick us some stuff. But are loads easier to keep on top of. And he still looks like a spaniel. Personally I’m not a fan of close clipped or short cut ears.

Thats why the cowboy magic serum is brilliant you just put a bit in between your fingers and work it into the tangle and then it just breaks it up.
