Eithin will be 6 months at the end of next month and i am planning to get her spayed but i am hoping for some advice from the spangle massive on this one.

Have you spayed before or after their first season? and what would you recommend having done so? the reason i ask i am concerned about the tiny tiny risk of urinary incontinence and i know that there is a hormonal aspect to this which is why some bitches are often spayed after their first season.

Eithin seems to have reasonable control of her bladder round people but can be easily over excited by other dogs which leads to a little puddle :)

Any advice or experiences greatly appreciated - since we took your advice on the trainer front things have been going fantastically well - at 5 months we have recall off lead 99% of the time, we no longer have hissy fits about other unwelcome dogs approaching her and she is showing great ability at finding things that are hidden. She's a brilliant wee dog (i'm sure everyone says that) but she has really made life fantastically better and i don't want to make her life and her dignity a problem for her by doing the wrong thing.

We don't want to keep her entire as i feel there are enough unwanted dogs out there, and i want to minimise the risks of mammary tumours and even though i think she is fab i don't think she is a good enough example of the breed to replicate.

anyway sorry for the long rambling post....... large vodka's for anyone who made it this far :)

It's a personal choice-are you going to be more upset by her becoming incontinent or having cancer? As the risk of cancer increases with each season from a very minimal amouint before first season.

My Springer is 2, she was spayed at approx 8 1/2 months, before she had her 1st season. I've had no problems with her. My jack russell (not a spaniel I know!) was also spayed before her 1st season, she is 12 1/2 now and shows no sign of incontinence at all. There will probably be others who disagree but I have no problem with spaying a dog before its 1st season.

My springer was about 14 months when we rehomed her, I'm not sure on these things but am presuming she'd already had a season, we had her in the April and had her spayed about 6 weeks later on the advice of the vet, sorry I can't remember but we did what they said.

She was very sorry for herself for a few days, just slept for most of it, the scar was very small and she didn't aggrevate it thank god, she was done on a wednesday and I took the time off (wed/thurs/fri) to keep an eye on her.

Her bladder seems fine, she hardly goes to the toilet in the garden she waits to be taken out and NEVER does no.2's in the garden. I have no idea how they house trained her but she seems to think no.2's is naughty and runs away after she's done it, I wish she would go in the garden sometimes I wouldn't like to think of her wanting to go, if you gotta go you gotta go. On a plus side it saves having to clear the garden of poop, we have a patio/concrete garden area, so I had to make her a pee patch by taking 4 up and laying a strip of grass, which she only uses if she's desparate !

I would say you are doing the responsible thing getting her done, my friend who's the nurse at the vets I go to had to nearly pick me up off the floor when she told me how much it was lol, bearing in mind the last time I'd had a bitch spayed was about 16 years before that and it was £40, think we paid bout £180 ish for the springer we have now

We had Chloe done at 6 months before her 1st season. She had to have a small op on her eyelid so the vet suggested we do both at once, only one GA that way. He explained the latest thinking on spaying so I was happy to go with his suggestion. She is now 2 and we have never had any problems with her bladder, in fact of my 3 dogs she will wait the longest for a wee and never seems uncomfortable in that dept.
