Does anyone have any experience of a horse throwing a bone spavin lump low in the hock with absolutely, categorically no lameness? I'm anxious to know if he's "got away with it" or if I should still expect him to go lame in the future.

the horse I have just bought had one, or was thought to have one on rear near hock, but after few weeks the hard lump slowly went down, and I was worried the vetting would show it up and insurance would not cover her, but the vet never found it, I asked him to check for spavins and he spent ages on her legs, but no sign of it at all? Vet thinks she had a knock on the leg and it was hard swelling with no lameness, both her back legs are clean now. Mystery dont you think, vet said not every horse who has a spavin will be lame, hope your horses is something simmilar.

Thanks that's very interesting. He has definitely kicked it, there is a faint mark on it, and it came up extremely suddenly. But it does SO look like a spavin. I've had one with them before, with much smaller lumps, but he was unsound and this one is not, even on a flexion. Your experience is very, very, interesting.

My horse had bone spavins in her hocks, only found out as her hock was x-rayed for a kick, otherwise i doubt i would have ever known. She was never lame with them, and my vet just said that they shouldn't affect her, but in time (as in a few years) she would properly have lamness issue as a result of arthitis caused by the bone spavins.

Thanks Indi4. I thought that once the joint had fused it caused no more problems, but your vet seems to suggest otherwise. I can cope with him being stiff later in life but he's only seven.
