Despite already gone through getting a horse sound with a bone spavin, I'm not sure what to do now with Lana.
Zara had steroid injections, Tildren and finally ethyl alcohol before she went even slightly sound. She was originally diagnosed in October 2010 when she was 1/10th lame but by the time she was treated with the alcohol in June 2011, she was 4/10ths lame. A friend of mine who has worked at The Royal Veterinary College said she probably went more lame because I didn't work her, I just left her in a field. This is what happened to her horse that got a spavin and she said she would always keep a horse ticking over now if the situation ever arose.
Lana has been diagnosed with spavin but unfortunately my vet is on holiday for 3 weeks and she is going to be injected with steroid when she comes back. She has said it is up to me if I want to carry on riding her and I do believe she would be better off with gentle exercise but I hate riding a horse I know is uncomfortable. She is not horrendously lame and is only obviously unsound on a circle or after a flexion test. Apparently she rolls a hip very slightly when I ride her in trot in a straight line but to be honest we're not sure whether she did that before because she has always had a wiggly walk and trot. Unfortunately, I cannot do a ride without hill work which she finds difficult.
Any ideas as to whether I should work her or not?
