Has anyone experienced arthritis in other joints after treatment from spavins. My horse had surgery in jan Its a slow process with good days and bad days but he is still hopping on occassion and Im begining to wonder if there is something else going on with the front end.The vet is coming out on the 12th so I will be doing a ridden and lunging work out with him.

Hi, my horse was diagnosed with arthritis in both back hocks in March and then my vet discovered he has high & low ringbone in both front legs. He had all joints medicated and touch wood at the mo he seems fine-hes only 8 years old, 17.1hh ex racer and im giving him some time off. hes in by day and goes out in the evening. i currently give him dodson & horrell Mobility & synequin and he is sound at thje moment. he also goes on the horse walker x3 a week. am planning to give him time off until december as i want to give him my best shot as hes only 8-i was gutted. Hopefully fingers x it wont be the same foir you

Sounds like we are in the same place at the moment my tb is 7 .He is really unsound Im begining to wonder if the surgery will work Ill get the vet to give him a good look over on thursday but we are already several months down the line and he seems worse this week than when first came back into gentle work in March.Your vet seems to have a different opinion on working them .I was told to hack out 5/6 days a week to help bone fuse .Have you been told to rest other than walker.

Spavin is arthritis located in the hock. my horse had surgery to encourage fusion. the right hock had fused - it was the left causing issue. he was 8 yrs old. he was still 1-2/10th lame a year on. he was a lot worse post-surgery - they thought he had infection - he didnt but he was very sore. looking back it was just his bones reaction to the surgery - he put down a lot of bone. due to his pain he was in box rest and pen rest for 3 months and didn't go out 24/7 until 7 months post-surgery. he then had 5 months field rest and then came back into work - hacking/long-low hill work etc. he is now ok and competing today.

It is not unusual for a horse to have arthritis in more than one joint. your vet should be able to find any other problem areas.

good luck - i know how you're feeling - we really went through the mill that year!

Hi Again. After the treatment my vet did explain i could ride him and i found some days he was short sometimes on a turn out hacking and was unlevel going down hill, so was giving him x2 bute the nite before i was hacking out and was fine then as a result. i currently cant ride due to a broken leg so that is why ive decided to give him some time off. i will say though hes had a month off now and there is 100% improvement in him and my vet who seen him last week agreed. he has improved with going out all nite then resting in the day when he comes in. Also when he comes in he has bioflow boots on all 4 legs and this has helped too. With the bute too i read that if you give 1/2 cup of corn oil this helps counter act the side affects of the drug. keep in touch! my email address is markhenton@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks aran knowing how long your horses joint took to fuse makes me feel more confident.Trouble is he has already had long spells off for other injuries nearly a year with this surgery as well.He is uncomfortable under saddle which I will ask vet to check. He is arcing his neck then bobbing it up and down and stretching his legs underneath if I put his saddle on.His saddle has been checked and is fine I wonder if he is compensating with his back for his bad hock.I suppose that would make sense one injury often causes another.

Thanks for that will email you and let you know how visist goes with vet.Unfortunately the danilon isnt really helping that much but he is a wimpy tb .

aran was very tight through his back and is very saddle sensitive. if the saddle moves he used to fully rodeo and run blind - they think that his back muscles were really sore as he was bracing his back to reduce the movement in his back legs. Now the pain has gone his back is much better. he still starts off in trot like a sewing maching but soon relaxes and starts swinging - its like he remembers what it was like. Most spavin is diagnosed due to the horse having back and under-saddle issues.
He is now almost doing a full medium trot which I thought would never happen and he was jumping 1.15 at the weekend - don't give up - it takes time.

Aran Hes done his suspensory ligament and has a splint I knew something else was going on .Anyone have a gun its for me

Scans next week .I think he did it in the field if hes not working he has loony moments.Thats 2 ligaments tendon nail puncture wound overreach cannon bone bruising all in 2 years.I dont know where to turn with him .

aran was a bit like that when he was younger. he's got better with age and definately less injury prone. there was a period where every time i turned him out there was a new injury and when not in work he was a total pain and irritation! its a tb thing!
good luck with the scan - hopefully it's really minor!
