i know of 1 who had her ovaries removed because she was producing too much oestrogen (sp?) i think and she went metal and was in danger of seriously injuring herself and her owner.
OH looked into it years ago for his hormonal mare but at that time it was a full GA and very expensive so he didn't go along with it (and obv would never be able to breed from her) - now I believe they can do it standing and it's a lot cheaper.
OH's mare incidentally has settled enormously now she's at home and managed differently
Lol sorry mental! But she is an arab so does have a long mane! She may have done I cant remember the full story but it wasnt good and she is starting the same behaviour again and is still producing this hormone from somewhere, its a bit of a mystery
Miller - yes this site said some thing like, 'blah, blah....and is now no different to having your colt gelded' meaning it was done standing. I'll keep hunting online.
it can be done but its a big operation usually only the ovarys are removed but it might just be easier to get a marble inserted if your mare is difficult when in season
Mine is in post operative care now. She had just her ovaries removed on the 4th june via laparoscapy through her flanks. It was done standing under heavy sedation and took about 3 hours
Yes, my mare (bay on the left of my siggie) had a full hysterectomy. Also was gelded. No I am not having a funny turn in the hot weather, she/he is a hermaphrodite. She/he was born with all the mare bits and looks like a mare externally, but was also found to have all the male tackle under the covers.
When she was young she was apparently an absolute nightmare, mounting mares, impossible to handle etc and they thought she would have to be put down. As a last resort they took a blood test and found she/he had very high testosterone and when they looked further they found out why.
It was I am told a massive operation, but successful in her case. All of her early experiences have made her very wary of people she doesn't know and it took a long time to build her trust!
I call her a mare because visually she is and also she has mareish attributes, like she will squeal and bang her front foot when meeting a strange horse and things like that. She's my gorgeous girl to me anyway!
I always think it would be funny to enter her in the handsome gelding AND prettiest mare class at the local show though!
