Our puppy is 4 and a half months old now, so will have to be spayed soon. Truoble is I have an awful fear of operations (human ones!) and am terrified of 1. Leaving her at the vets because she will be scared and not know where she is, and 2. Something going wrong.
I know, it is a simple operation that so many bitches have done but my fear is making me scared for her!
How long are they at the vets for? Do they stay overnight or just for the day?
God Im being silly

I work at the vets and have seen hundreds of dogs through being neutered with my own and the rescues....a spay is a bigger operation that a castrate and takes a little longer for recovery.

She will be admitted first thing in the morning....she will be under the anaesthetic within an hour and would have a pre-med before being placed in the kennel before her op...so it will be a matter of 10 mins before she is feeling relaxed....so don't worry.
You will be asked to call in in the afternoon to see when she is awake enough for you to take home and will have her back well before tea time........it's rare to have complications and your vet will have no doubt carried out hundreds of these operations....she will be under the anaesthetic less than an hour

and she will wake slowly and be sleepy till u collect her, so again no undue stress for her.

She will walk out and the nurse will go through the after care with you...i.e keeping her quet for a few days and leash exercise after initial rest until stitches out in 10 days, u will need to make sure she does not lick/chew at her stitches and she would have been given pain relief to last her for the night which is all she will need, she will be a little groggy, need a light feed and be right as rain the next day.

Dogs are alot tougher than humans and don't feel scared as such, she will just be a little anxious when u leave because she will be in an unfamiliar environment, but she will get her pre-med asap so will not be anxious for long.

I wouldn't class it as a simple operation but it is a common operation. I had 3 of my bitches in being spayed earlier in the year - 2 had complications however all came fine in the end.

Most vets will want you to take the dog home that evening, to convalesce in the quiet and familiar surroundings of their own home. You take them in first thing in the morning of the operation.

Ok thanks, I was just a bit scared that she would have to stay overnight or something. I am such a worrier

It is usually straightforward and she will be much better off- well done! And she will just be a bit sleepy the rest of the day (all the better to cuddle her!) Next day pretty much back to normal and you can play with her.

good luck with it!
