Please before anyone shoots me down in flames, I'm currently going through a relapse of my pnd so any rude and stupidly blunt posts will be ignored.

Rox is now 19 months, had her second season as vet has recommended to leave her to have before spaying. I'm living back with my parents so obviously they want me to spay her to save the mess which is fair enough. I also appreciate the ALL the other problems not spaying her leaves open!!

HOWEVER I am getting very upset and worried about everyone keep telling me how much quieter it is going to make her. It sounds daft but although sometimes her nuttiness gets on my nerves but I don't want a quiet and subdued Rox, and even dafter still if she was quiet I wouldn't see her a being my dog. Does spaying always make them quieten down? The only dogs I have met before getting Rox were already spayed so have nothing to compare.
 
Well I don't know about spaying but Henry is neutered, and if this is him calm and subdued I'm not sure I'd want to have met him while he had his nadgers:eek::D

I think with these sorts of things much depends on the dog and the life that they have. If she carries on getting plenty of exercise and mental stimulation I'm sure she won't change too much:)
 
My lab bitch didn't change at all from being spayed. the only thing she did do was add a few pounds, but personality wise she is still the same :)
 
My lab cross was nicknamed Mad Alice before she was spayed in February. She is still very much Alice and very much mad. Not gained weight either as she zooms about so much. So, not in my experience though a little slowing down would be welcome!

My little girl was done 5 weeks ago and if anything she's been distinctly more nutty since :rolleyes:

She was quiet when she first came home from the vets though, of course. She was quite subdued and tender in that respect, but only for a matter of days whilst she was sore, not even the ten days of waiting to have her stitches out.
 
It won't make her any quieter/subdued, some feel a bit sorry for themselves after the initial op but they soon bounce back, I don't know where 'everyone' is getting their information from?!
If they are left open/unspayed, pyometra makes them much more subdued, in fact it often makes them dead - I know what I'd prefer x
 
I think it's just the recieved wisdom isn't it CC - 'everyone' knows some things, like 'everyone knows' chestnut mares were complete cowbags, 'everyone knows' cobs are boring plods for novices only, 'everyone knows' spaniels are all mentalists (well maybe that last one is a bad example:D)

OP, just wanted to add, sorry you are feeling rough and hope you feel better soon.
 
I have had several of my bitches spayed and I can honestly say it hasn't changed their character in the slightest. Last year I lost a bitch to pyo who wasn't spayed, so I know which I would recommend.:( Hope you start to feel better soon.
 
Haha CC I'm not that bad that I can't see that was Tongue in check ;-) and yes I wouldn't not do it, the benefits of it far outweigh the not doing it! But given my state at the moment am so fed up of people telling me she'll be quiet as a lamb because of it. I do obviously appreciate she'll be quiet for a few weeks whilst recovering but hey I didn't feel like doing much for a few weeks after having my son!
 
Didn't change my bitch one jot (she's still a bloody nightmare :p) and if anything she's actually lost weight and become a lot fitter in the months (years, actually!) since.
 
Betty has not changed at all since she was spayed! :p she felt sorry for herself while recovering from the anesthesia... but after that you would never have known she'd been sliced and diced! (she had a tooth removed at the same time!)

it was hard to keep her on restricted exercise until her stitches came out! and she has not gained any weight since being done either- which i was slightly worried about.

Lol at those who says bitches are quieter when neutered, I am sure this has to be some kind of scare mongering (not sure what the heck for):confused: it will not change her at all apart from suggested a few days of quietness and being a little subdued (which is needed) for recovery.
I think I would have seen this quiet/subduedness, I have 5 bitches at present and have probably had another 10 of my own in the past (now in heaven) (not including hundreds) of rescues bitches and I have never ever seen this perminant quietness/change/subdued behaviour these people speak of:confused:, I would be asking them what and how many they are basing their info on to be honest.
 
Thanks everyone! One of the people who's said it has been OH who has had dogs in his family all his life. I think maybe he's been saying it to wind me up even more!
 
I think they are to be honest. I personally have no reason to tell you porkies:p and I am basing this on hundreds of bitches not even just my own;) I definately think I would have seen this change! it would even be helpful in the the more "lively breeds" like the labs and boxers, but no change, they return to craziness rather soon afterwards Im affraid:p
The one thing I will be thruthfull about and where you may see change is that she will be more prone to weight gain, but if you reduce her food accordingly as you see any gain and exercise as you are that is rather easy to maintain also, I have 10 dogs and none over weight and all neutered as with the majority of slendertone dogs that are neutered on this forum.:)
 
CC I know you have no reason to lie to me, OH does though :-( I just love my little nutty boxer and at the moment it's her keeping me doing along with my son hence this panic over her calming down. I wouldn't change her for the world except her slight walk issues and pulling but we are getting there slowly (also think Fenton video for what she can occasionally be like minus deers!)

Lol, so you have a boxer....your OH is dreaming if he thinks spaying will calm her down.......they are stoopid for life:D:D:D my OH walks 3 boxer bitches all neutered all bonkers:p:D
We also have an older boxer dog in our rescue, he is also a loon bag:rolleyes::D

Why have we never had any piccies:mad: of her:p

Haha! OH has always been around gun dogs, so I think when he agreed to get a dog of my choice he always onto a loser!

As for pictures, I have to admit I haven't posted any for a few reasons:

1) I'm well aware she doesn't look like a boxer but having seen both mummy rox and daddy rox she has come from 2 boxers!!

2) AAD scares me sometimes with peoples opinions and posts hence the very first sentance in my OP.

Now though I shall make up for it!!

My bitch was spayed last month, she is not any calmer/quieter than she was, just a bit more tolerant of other dogs. She was found to have an abnormal uterus and was apparently on her way to having an infection so being spayed probably saved her life
 
I have a 14 week old Lakeland Terrier and she is my first bitch.
Everyone tells me I should have her spayed but I have two questions:-

1. When? (after her first season I am guessing)
2. I have been told it can make them incontinent. True or false?

I go by growth, so after her first would be fine for her breed as she is full grown and her growth plates will be closed (making them less likely to grow taller than they should), they will also have been close closure at 6 to 7 months thats when I would do such a small breed (but it personal choice there) the less seasons you allow them to have to less chance of mammary tumours/cancer later in life and obs no chance of a pyo with a spayed bitch (which is the other potential killer)
Larger bitches are more prone to incontinence when neutered younger but eventually and this goes for all bitches, you will find as many incontinent bitches out there at older age neutered v un neutered. It's just more common in large breed bitches when neutered younger.

I have never had an incontinent bitch, and have always owned large breed dogs and they have all lived very long lives. But I have know folk to have incontinent bitches, my mams shepherd did, however it was not straight forward incontinence and she had surgery to correct it, she was neutered young.
A client of mine has a un neutered 6 yr old labrador (hardly old) and she is incontinent.
 
I would definitely not worry about having a bitch neutered . We didn't get our setter done, and she had pyometra. Luckily recovered from it, but died of mammary tumours. I've never heard of spaying quietening a dog down. We are gettng our jrtx done in Jan (3 months after her season). It would be great f it did quieten her down as she s completely bonkers!!
