Spaying

I've seen that at the vets where I work, and usually goes away with a bit more after care. Try to not worry -- she's a bichon - they're prone to skin blips.

Sorry to hear it is not quite right yet. My little JRT had a similar problem which became a bit chronic. She was not suffering from an infection but was allergic to the sutures. After quite a few weeks she had to have the internal sutures removed and replaced with another material, her external wound was then closed with clips. I am cross with myself (and my vet) that this was not done sooner, so if it continues I would raise the possibility of this being a reaction rather than anything else.
My little one is absolutely fine and you cannot see the scar at all and she made a swift and perfect recovery second time round.

Hope she picks up soon x

Hope all settles down soon amymay. My boys are going in for their op on 6th March. Kevin has a retained testicle, so that is going to throw a spanner in the works. They are such a worry aren't they? Small, but like to make their presence known.:)

A huge worry.

I told the vet today that I would never, ever put another dog through this. She's been knocked for six by it.
I think when you see the benefits that she will have re her freedom etc you will be glad you've had it done. when I had my two girls left unspayed for a number of years I used to lose a good month of free excercise time...one bled for 22 days every time..then I'd worry about pyometria.Like you I was worried sick during the time they went in for the op,but afterwards I was so relieved they were done and could get on with their lives unhampered by seasons.
Every dog is different too,so your little one was probably unlucky re her recovery.
I hope she's fine soon.

It is horrible having it done as you (well, I) feel that you are putting them through a non essential operation to make our lives easier. As Bellasophia says tohugh think of the future, nearly 2 months grounded a year x maybe 15 years could be nearly 3 years of no off lead exercise and bleeding all over the house. It is so worth it.
I do hope she is better soon though, these fancy breeds, I don't know! ;-)

I am so sorry things have not been straightforward with Daisy, amymay. I have had so many bitches spayed over the years with no problem. You have done the right thing and all will be well. Don't let it put you and other people off as it is much better for the bitch if not intended for breeding.
I know what a worry it is for you at the moment, best wishes and keep us informed.

amymay please don't beat yourself up about this. Fwiw I have never had a bitch spayed for my own convenience, but because I have seen bitches suffer from false pregnancies , and worse, pyometras and even though mine have romped through the spaying I would far rather a couple of weeks of discomfort than the possible alternative, which I have had, of losing a bitch to pyo. :(
I am sure Daisy will be back to normal soon.

Really useful thread - my beagle is going in on 6th March to be spayed so handy having more idea what to expect with the aftercare and time frames... had visions of her having to wear a cone non-stop till sutures removed, but sounds like hopefully that won't be the case :)

Does anyone have experience nice of having an older bitch spayed? Puzzle is 8, retired from kennels in the summer to be a pampered pet :)

OP - if it makes you feel any better, I myself had a reaction to the sutures used after an op, but was so dopey I didn't realise what was going on till a bit late to resuture... doh.

Yes, Lego, many years ago I had an 11yr old large lurcher spayed. In those days I didn't automatically have my bitches spayed. She was poorly and the vet was very quick to diagnose the infection and we had no choice. I was worried she was old but she came through fine and was quickly back to normal.
I have never had a cone on any of my bitches and they have never touched their stitches. Obviously you have to keep an eye on them and maybe I have just been lucky. I hope all goes well for you.

Thanks MM.

It's been so helpful posting on here.

Glad to hear that Daisy is back to her normal self. My dog had her check up yesterday and her wound seems to be healing well. Just one more week of trying to keep her quiet!
