I was at a large horse show (county show) recently and entered a showing class they had put on for Riding club members only, I have 2 issues..

1) What is the judge looking for, the class had every type of horse in it and varying levels of dress and tack, the winner was a large pony type in a snaffle which was ridden on a loose rein, true show types (like mine) in hunter dress and double bridles all finished way down the line

2)now I have no issue being unplaced but I was really insulted to receive a special rosette - just because we ride at riding club level does not mean we need treating like children and given a reward for taking part- we don't get a special when our dressage score isn't good enough for a place or we knock a pole jumping anyone else share my feeling or am I being to sensitive!

Well for a mix of just riding club members the judge would have to go by type (hunter, coloured, veteran etc), turn out, conformation, manners and movement. Nightmare of a class to judge when not comparing similar types. But it sounds like the class is there to encourage club members into showing and hence all the rosettes. Being open to any types it really isn't going to lead to qualification to higher levels but good experience for riders or young horses. Not 'correct' but nothing wrong for everyone to receive rosettes from the club for participants support and effort on the day.

I wouldn't be offended. I'd be grateful for the thought. Did you ask the judge why you came down the end of the line?

I once got a special for trying 6 times round the clear round jumping (in which we demolished most of the jumps) she said it was for perseverance! I loved it, but I imagine some people would have taken offence!

I wouldn't necessarily take offence. I find it stupid that some shows do that, and it is more aimed at children yes, but I'd just shove the rosette in the drawer and forget about it tbh. Some people actually do get joy from just getting a rosette (can't get my head around that one myself).
