I have just been talking to a friend who works with a 25 year old guy. He has just bought his first horse - nothing wrong with that except .........

This guy had " a few" riding lessons - when he was 12 and nothing since.

He has bought a 5yo 17hh Irish TB - the guy is 6ft and must be 17-18 stone (read fat) He went to see it on his own at a dealers yard. Didn't ride it or see it ridden coz there was nobody around to ride when he went but it's ok because they said it is quiet to ride!

The horse is being delivered on Sunday to a diy yard - he is going to do it himself!

The horse will be fed competition mix because it is a competition horse!!!!!!!

OMG

Well give him a few days and Im sure he'll realise what he's let himself in for!!! Poor horse

Hmmm, the yard its going to is not known for its great knowledge of horses shall we say!

Friend says he is going to go and buy a saddle for it on Saturday so he can ride on Sunday afternoon!

h my god what a tw@t! my horse is now a project horse because of some idiot hes now mentaly physco!
so now im trying to sort him out and bring him back to his full potential (sorry about the spellings im useless)
people like this make me mad!

Well hppefully if he really hasn't had any horse contact since he was 12 he will not know how to tack it up and not be able to ride it?!

although i appreciate he sounds like a numpty for doing this, i also hope he doesnt get seriously hurt as im sure falling from a 17hh in itself will be painful, but falling from it if its bolting/rearing/bucking will be a hell of a lot more hurtful/dangerous and not to mention anyone thats around or gets in the way of it!!

dyou know what, I bet this guy is one of those jammy swines who just buys a horse & gets on & goes off hunting. I reckon he'll be fine on top.

The worry is, that he may not be so sure on the ground.

OR - are we being a bit harsh here. Perhaps the guy's GF has horses, or his sister or family. Perhaps he has lied about only having a few lessons (so he looks good).

The story is heresay. Pinch of salt needed IMO.

Good point MayFlower, maybe he knows more then he is letting on? My OH was one of those jammies who had a few lessons as a kid, and then was cantering in his first lesson as an adult.

Not heresay. I know the guy and my OH works with him too!

whilst of course its his own business what he does (everyone knows its an idotic thing to do) if hes on a yard there is bound to be other people keeping an eye on the welfare of the horse,,,, what really gets me with this is,, it wont be him who suffers it will be someone else,, for example,, the horse is over fed and sharp and because of his stupidity the horse will escape from him and either kick someone elses horse or run someone over or worse!!!! In the wrong hands these huge animals can cause serious harm to others and themselves! IN the hands of a clown they WILL cause harm to themselves and others!!!how I wish people would think how their actions affect others too

QR This is a really difficult one, because it seems he needs to start from point A with regard to both riding and (probably more importantly) stable/horse management.
Even the kindest people at a yard will only have so much time to give him. I would suggest he pays for a 'mentor' or proper instruction (stable management as well as riding) from point A, which of course will cost a good deal. Otherwise he is going to get it wrong and learn from each mistake (hopefully learn anyway), but the horse could suffer in the meanwhile.
Some people just think a horse is like a bicycle.

Why not, instead of slagging him off - try and help him?

How bout that for a novel idea?

are you feeling ok babe lol

good point tho

Maybe the horse is much older than thought and not full of himself.....
The new owner may have a wealth of knowledge just lacking in experience, and quite possibly he has bought a sane horse and will learn with him. Everybody has to leanr abd, as someone else said, maybe he has a horsey friend.

OK, he's an idiot

I have seen this sort of thing many times over the years in a number of different past times. In the world of shooting we call it 'all the gear and no idea'.

I can only hope the chap is buying the horse with the best intentions and that a few suggestions about training and lessons are well received.

However, experience tells me that no matter how well intentioned fellow liveries are, this is a disaster about to happen.

What I find MOST maddening (in fact it makes my blood boil), is that there is nothing that can be done to stop a dealer, or private person, selling a completely unsuitable horse to an unsuitable owner, and that money is regarded a higher priority than the long term wellbeing of both horse and owner.

You know who I am and where I keep my horse, that is a very unfair comment Araminta

Its a DIY yard with some very experienced people there which are willing to help them, whether or not they take their advice is another matter. I'm personally not getting involved....

my friend has just done the same thing but..........she bought a 6 month old Friesian filly via internet
shocked.gif
. So far she has spent triple the price of the filly on phone calls to me asking advice
laugh.gif
. So far so good but its early days yet

. I wish him all the luck in the world and just maybe, he could turn out better than you (OP)
