Just a quick speedi beet question - I know you can soak it in 10 mins - but can you leave it soaked over night.

I usually do up a bucket of sugar beet for a few days - can I do similar with speedi beet?

Thx

I leave it overnight. I soak it in the afternoon then most of it gets used for dinners but I keep some left over for my old mare who also gets breakfast as well. I never keep it more than 24 hours though.

I was thinking about this time of year, thats why i asked about not keeping it more than 24 hours. I make enough to last up to two days in winter.

OK - thanks guys - soaking just a bit each morning for evening feeds is fine by me to do - as long as I am organised. I think I will just have to get into the routine so that I remember!

Thanks for your help everyone xx

I have done two days when using a lot, but at the moment they only get a mug of dry speedibeet in each feed so I just really wet the feed down and leave it 10 minutes which saves time - and have done this for several years. I would only do this with speedibeet though and never with sugar beet.

Main thing is that it does not smell of vinegar - then it has turned.

Just curious, but what made you change to Speedibeat when you prefer to soak 24 hours, especially when sugar beat is SO much cheaperr to use?

[/ QUOTE ] Presumably because the standard sugar beet is 20% sugar and Speedibeet (being unmolassed) is 5% sugar. Although you can get unmolassed long soak beet, not everywhere sells it - I know the only unmolassed beet I can get at my local feed store is Speedibeet.

TBH even the fast soak stuff I wouldnt out of habit feed it after 15mins... I took some juice off the stuff that I had put in to soak 30mins earlier... this morning it had swelled a massive amount

So... I try to leave it at least an hour before feeding it

A mug of dry is about 1/2 round scoop of soaked. I make feeds up in advance with the dry speedibeet included at the weekend and then on the day transfer from buckets into the skips and hose them until very sloppy and leave at least ten minutes. Realistically this is the first job I do, so by the time they actually eat them it is normally at least 30 minutes plus or the next morning.

This is it precisely!

Speedibeet is the only one that the feed merchants I use has. I wanted to make the change sooner rather than later, but will spend some more time trying to find another source of an alternative during this bag.

As long as it smells ok

And isn't making any sort of crackling noise if you listen to it - you should be fine, but I do just enough for the feeds I am giving and use it all up. I do hot, fresh, every time in winter.

I leave it longer than 15 minutes. I make mine in the morning ready for night feeds. I make a bucket which lasts 3 days.

We cant feed it Shiney - the oldie as it fizzes him up.

OK, thanks. Was aware of that, but asumed you had been using sugar beat previously. Cheers

I put a 3/4 scoop dry in each bucket. I make up two buckets at a time ( a standard water bucket) and it swells to a full bucket and these last me 3 days. The only thing I have found is that it swells alot lot more after 10 mins so I always make mine up in a morning to feed in the evening. I also feed it because my horse has to be fed a low sugar diet due to his temperament and this is fine

I used speedi beet all last winter and made my feeds up the day/night before. Good thing is speedi beet doesn't freeze either in the cold weather

I make a bucket up every night and feed it the next morning & night.
Like KatB says it does swell up loads I dont chance feeding it after 10 mins soaking it maybe better if using hot water.

Mine are on simple systems so along with their mug of dried speedibeet they have a heaped round scoop of green gold and another of just grass. They then have a mug of black sunflower seeds and a mug of linseed plus their vit and min supplement so my feed are fairly big fibre ones and do take them a bit of time to eat.

As said, I make the feed in advance and then add lots of water so it is very sloppy and then give it about 15 minutes to soak the water up and it is normally 30 plus before they get to eat it and breakfast is fed the next day.

The breakfast feeds are not that much larger than the dinner feed is after 30 minutes.

Mine have never (so far) had colic or any gut problems, so for them this works. However, if I were to increase the amount of speedibeet, I would then pre soak in another bucket.

Finally, I have found that the same amount of speedibeet, ie 1 mug when soaked is the same amount as 1 mug of nuts in volume if you soak them, and most people are happy to have dried nuts fed, hence another reason why I am not concerned about how I feed this small amount of speedibeet.
