Speedibeet

I am starting to give mine speedibeet with her tea as the grass is sparse. I only have one horse and as she adjusts to it I'm only giving her a handful at the minute. Can I make up a big batch or will it go off quickly?

I was planning on maybe making a weeks worth instead of tiny lots every night but someone said it ferments quicker than traditional sugarbeet and wouldn't last very long once soaked.

Would I be better off using traditional sugarbeet, and what should I look for to see if speedibeet has gone off

I make enough to last me about 5 days in a small bucket with a lid on. I've not had any problems.

I wouldn't personally make it up more than 24 hours ahead - and anyway, if you make it with hot water you only have to wait 5 minutes!
I make up breakfast and tea speedibeet the night before, and in Summer 15 minutes before as I find it smells off if you leave it overnight in hot weather. I am paranoid about colic and wouldn't be willing to risk it going off or fermenting!

I don't like to keep it any more than a couple of days, definately not a week sorry.
I quite often make it up in the morning and then feed it in the evening.

I make a bucket full up and that lasts about 4 or 5 days, never had a problem, and its never gone off.

ETA i know of 2 other people that make a bucket full up too and they have never had a problem either.

I feed a little all year round and make it up daily - actually as I only use a handful of dry speedibeet in the summer months I put it straight into the feed and then add plenty of water and leave it for 10 mins and then give it to the horses (would not do with with sugarbeet though).

In winter I tend to do enough for two days at a time.

As long as the weather is cold you can get away with 3 - 5 days soaked but if it smells of vinegar, chuck it as it has got warm and fermented.

I do mine the night before but when it freezes at night i take a flask of boiling water and just add a bit of cold water when its done . That way their food is not cold in the winter.

I just do a days worth at a time tbh. It's so quick and easy, doesn't take any time at all. in the propper winter it will freeze and you'll have to keep defrosting it daily - I just defrost a potion with some boiling water from the kettle if nec, making a nice warm mash...

I make enough up for the day - brekkie and dinner and if I've made plenty then I give her that the next day and re-make!
She only gets a smal scoop in dinner and just under that for brekkie.

what about fast fibre? - soaks in about a minute and almost instantly if you use hot water (well, it was cold last winter!!

it is designed to be made up either the required time before feeding or you can make it up the night before. It is very bad practice to mix up speedibeet, fibrebeet, sugar beet etc and not use it within 24hrs. it starts to go off and although will not smell for few days in cold weather ,does deteriorate in quality so is false economy anywany. it will loose a lot of nutrients etc if left longer than 24 hrs

if you are paying the premium price for speedibeet (which soaks up in 10 mins) then work as per instructions. or pay the basic rate for sugar beet shreds and wait! if you put kettle on and do the speedi beet then it will be ready far before you have caught the beast and changed the PJs!! my horses dont like speedibeet! but ove the SB shreds!!!!

I find it keeps longer in winter, i make a bucketful at a time which lasts my neds 2 days worth of breakfast and dinner. But i certainly wouldnt keep it a week.. i find it tends to go all sticky, stinks of vinegar and sometimes gets a bit mouldy if left longer than 2 days!
