But it’s not us :( (v long sorry!)

For anyone who missed the backstory – Spike is a Border Terrier we’ve been looking after whilst his owners are on holiday down South, on the understanding that if all went well, we could keep him or we could give him back next weekend when they’re back from holiday.

All has been going well – he’s a lovely chap who is getting more and more well behaved (lots more exercise than before and us bellowing at him when he’s being a terror). We’ve been in contact with the current owners every few days via text or phone and they’ve been delighted we’ve all been getting on so well and discussed making it a permanent arrangement.

Yesterday, OH took Spike and The Spangle for a romp, and met friends of his (who lost their lab at Xmas) and it turns out they know Spike and his owners. Had a chat about how well Spike was looking and OH told them we were chuffed to bits with him yadda yadda and carried on with the walk.

Now, I’ve just had a call from Spike’s owners and OH’s friends have been in touch – and offered £300 for Spike! He’s not even registered...but they’ve apparently realised he’d be perfect for them and since he’s “on the market” they’ve put in an offer for him and Spike’s owners have accepted!

I feel a bit sick about the whole thing to be honest. I was concerned about us taking him on because we seemed like an easy re-homing option for the owners, but now they’re making money out of the whole thing?! OH’s friends are nice people and will give him a fab home so I suppose that’s the main thing, just the only thing between us and them was £300....eugh. It’s not like the current owners are short of money either but they’re taking the line of feeling sorry for the “bidders” as they lost their lab, which you can’t argue with, can you? I feel we’ve been gazumped, which is silly I know – not that we ever had any proper claim over Spike, but this was supposed to be a between friends arrangement and it’s properly shocked me. I can’t believe how naive we’ve been, and how money really does seem to make the world go round :(

Sorry for the rant, I just don’t like the way this whole situation has panned out. Lesson learnt! Off to sob into the spangle and tell her she's never going anywhere, ever.... poor sod!

Wow, that's just...strange. No actually, it's lousy, on him, and you.
Not the first time this weekend we have seen people putting money before welfare, sadly.....

Poor wee mite, the whole thing is going to make him very unsettled :(
I don't care how much money was being offered, if I had to rehome a dog to a home where he was happy, then I'd do it for free.

Hugs for ya x

Hi that sounds really upsetting for you after all the effort you have put in, and the dog is already settled with you. We gave a dog a new home in the summer - one of those fashionable crosses - a schnoodle. But her owners didn't want any money for her, just wanted a good home for her. Which to me would be the priority.

What absolute pigs his old owners sound:mad:Total people of questionable parentage (can't say what I want, I'd be in trouble):mad:People like that shouldn't be allowed a goldfish, never mind a dog  Lemmee att'em!

I'm sorry you've been upset hun:(

Thanks guys, they will give him a good home (little voice in my head shouting "Not as good as us!!" - but that is plain childish!). He's been here less than a week, but I think we will definitely miss him. Still, we have another week to have fun with him and we'll have to arrange play-dates for him and spangle-head in the future!!

Spike's soon-to-be-ex-owners are definitely not getting another dog which is something to be thankful for...and OH has been round to "water" their plant-pots (He only told me that just now, he is disgusting :p)

That does sound a bit sh..ty. Sad aswell. I wouldn't be too pleased if they were my ohs friends, did they know you were keen on keeping Spike? If they did, thats double sh..ty!

well your OH s friends were a bit underhand going direct to the owners, but as long as they will give him a nice home and life, however spike's current owners are being selfish and greedy and also underhand having already offered him to you, and when you give him back just remember to give them a bill for looking after him, around £10 per day is the going rate for holiday boarding in your own home. they can pay you out of what they have sold him for!! shame for you as you have done the work and socialising.
