Hi TGM and anyone else following on from my humungous High Fibre low starch post I have over the past 10 days changed my feed slightly.

Drif was on 3.5kg Winergy Equilibrium Condition in two feeds I changed this over the last 10 days and gave him a lot less Winergy plus a plastic beer mug of spillers High Fibre (I dont drink and ride it was just a handy plastic container) I guess he has had about 300g high fibre plus 1kg winergy per feed. He doesnt appear to be losing condition but more interestingly he doesnt finish his feed there is always some left and its not the cubes.

What does this tell you ?? he always used to scoff the lot when he was on just winergy.

It is possible that he prefers the cubes to the Winergy. Short chop fibre feeds like Winergy or chaff take a lot of chewing time to eat, which is good in some ways, but some horses can get fed up and want more instant satisfaction! Short chop feeds can be a bit like rice-cakes or Ryvita to a horse - a lot of chewing and not that exciting! All the time he was on Winergy only there was nothing to compare it to, but then adding the tastier cubes might have made his the rest of his feed look dull by comparison - perhaps you could compare it to having a few chips followed by some rice-cakes. If you were only offered rice-cakes you would probably eat them out of hunger, but if you had some chips first you might lose your appetite for the rice-cakes.

Alternatively, it might be pure coincidence - has Drifter been in more due to the bad weather, or had less work recently, as this can result in a lower appetite?
