Just wondering which you prefer and why? Currently looking at changing my NF's feed to one of these as he is currently on fast fibre and a few various other things but i'm not wanting to feed 3kg a day through the summer!

Thanks :-)

Why do you need to feed through the summer?

Good point! He is not your average NF and very prone to being very deficient in vits and mins and can lose condition if you're not careful :-)

Also, he is out competing at least every weekend and in medium work the rest of the time so needs enough to maintain work of this level and to be in show condition, which I achieve by correct schooling, muscle tone and good feeding as opposed to just making him fat then smothering with show shine ;)

Good answer! :)

Sounds like a fit horse!! We have a hard working forester at my yard! She needs a bit of food in winter but in the summer does everything with just a decent mineral lick. I know, bizarre! I think a balancer would be perfect. Obviously, with hard working horses, they need protein for muscle repair and development but also enough steady energy so look for one that has all the vits and mins plus amino acids/decent level of protein 10% -12% and if you need slow release energy... Speedibeet and a handful of oats! If oats are a complete no no, micronised linseed provides energy in oil form. Some ponies do better with higher fat than carb content.

Good luck with all you're doing! The feed world is a minefield but it helps to know what you need in order to narrow it down.

Thanks for your help, so much out there its hard to know!

I really rate the Spillers balancers. My fell was on the lite version for about 2 years then I switched him to the original last year when his schooling increased and i wanted to make sure he had enough protein for muscle building (baring in mind grass etc. was super restricted for his chubber-ness). I always get comments about his shiny coat and big mane and I definitely put it down to his diet (it's not because I'm a super keen groom!).
