My horse keeps soaking his bed (shavings) as he seems to play with his water overnight although we haven't seen him do this:confused:. He's costing me a fortune in shavings! His water trug sits in a very deep tyre but this hasn't helped. He has a rock salt lick and a lick on a rope. They haven't helped. I'm going to try a Jolly Ball and a HorseLyx in a bracket to try and get him to fiddle with something else as he does love a good fiddle! He's ridden most days and is turned out during the day. I'd be really grateful for any ideas to stop him soaking his bed please.

Hook on the wall that clips on to the bucket handle should do the job! Worked with my lad. You can get them from most equestrian places/shops to just screw onto the wall.

You want the Stubbs flat back buckets that hang on the wall with special clips that you buy with them, a bit like a tie ring but with a clip on it you screw it to the wall and hang the bucket from it. We have ours so the buckets hangs about level with the horses chest.
Hope ive made sense.
You can buy the buckets and clips from any mail order catalouge.

Dont know if this will help but, my boy loves to play with his feed bucket, just the rubber one so he cant break it, but he loved to pick it up and through it round his stable, so after his feed i just leave his bucket in with him, you could try this??

I did this but ponio rubbed his bottom on the bucket and made it a very funny shape. Have now fixed clip so bucket is on the floor and now all is well and the floor is dry:)

Have you got shavings right up to the stable door? My horses have deep litter shavings beds at the back 2/3rds of the stable. The front 1/3rd is rubber mats or just the stable floor. Could you reposition the bucket so it's not standing in the shavings? It might be that your horse likes to stand exactly where his water bucket is. An automatic drinker would probably solve the problem but I hate them!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Very helpful! I'll give the flat backed bucket and clip a go. Shavings are well back from the door and he takes his manger out of its rack to play with! I will try toys too though.:)

Another suggestion for you.

My boy does exactly the same thing.

I have a tyre, one of those feed buckets designed to fit in the tyre and then the large trug inside the feed bucket.

If I use just the tyre, the trug is quite loose and doesn't last long. With the feed bucket inside too the trug is firmly wedged and doesn't move (unless empty).

eta: if I used a wall mounted bucket that wouldn't last long it would just become a challenge. He rips everything and anything off the walls.

Use a solid tub (one of the big stubbs ones are ideal) rather than a bendy rubber one which slops water out when kicked! He may do it completely innocently when lying down or turning round in his stable ;)

i use a tub trug put inside 2 tyres, the top one is a land rover tyre, the lower tyre is smaller. It has stopped any pulling out of the water bucket.

Hi,Ii have a very messy mare that plays with her warter:mad: and is also on shavings, i have an automatic feeder in the corner with a trug underneath to help catch the spills around this i put her leftover hay let it build up and remove every other day or two the hay soaks up most before my shavings do . she tends to dip her face in and out must be fun:), for the last 2 weeks i have found it better and used less fresh shavings.

Hi my boy is the same, pulls all his rugs off the walls ( i now have to keep them with his hay) he has to have a tyre bucket otherwise he kicks it all around his stable, his water has also been upside down too. although not a regular thing these days. i was going to try the clips to pin everything down so will give that a go. He has a Horse Ball to play with, have you tried putting an old welly boot in stable or old riding boot. i put one in field as my boy kept wanting to play with other liveries all the time as some were not interested he loves his boot, plays with it for hours.

Sometimes his stable is like a teenagers Bedroom... But then he's only 3

I'm hoping he grows out of it all...

Just a suggestion for a toy that ive recently used as my mare has recently taken to dragging her rugs off her rack as the hays crap and although ive bough timothy horseage to mix it with so shes still getting enough shes getting bored thorughout the day if its a day shes in because shes bored and hungry. So ive got one of those tongue twisters on the wall and because she wont entertain the likets ive carved it out a mint one, crunched it up, mixed it with molasses, oats and alfa-A light and made my own tasty treat for her, put it back in the holder and put it in the fridge to hardern, ill find out today whether its done the trick but she seemed to love it when i left last night lol x
