Spinal dysraphisim in Weimaraners

Please help if you have any info on this condition, we have a puppy,we are unsure about his condition he is at present having tests, we are very worried and concerned can anyone tell me the prognosis for this problem as I am getting conflicting reports.

This is pretty rare which is why I don't think you're getting many replies. My understanding of this is its a congenital malformation of the vertebrae of the spine and its not an operable condition. I would therefore think the prognosis would depend on how severe and where abouts the lesions are. Apparently they occur most commonly in the lumbar spine which would mean symptoms would generally only affect the hindlimbs - from mild stumbling and knuckling of the back feet through to paralysis if severe. I suppose it could also feasibly affect continance too. If the lesions were in the neck it could also affect the front limbs which would be a poorer prognosis.
I would speak to your vet and have a full neurological exam done and they will be able to advise you how severe or wide spread the problem is. It may be possible to refer you for an MRI scan which would be the best way of imaging the spine and seeing the extent of the problem.
