My mare was kicked in the field by a horse with no back shoes on, but he has managed to fracture her splint bone. She is having the operation to remove it next week, but I just wanted to hear from people who have been through this, as very apprehensive about her having the general anaesthetic and the recovery.

My vet said she would possibly be home 24 hours after the op but could be a day or two longer. He said the stitches would come out after 10 days and after 2 weeks I could possibly start ridden walking work. How long did everyone elses horses take to recover-come home/when did they start walking/ridden work and how long until they were back in full work.

I just want it to be this time next week and for all this to be over with and her back home safe and sound.

my pony had this op twice, and recovered really well, he was 18 the first time and 20 the second time. Coped with general anaesthetic much better first time than second. But in both instances, he was back home within 4 days.
After first op, was back on within 3 weeks. I wouldn't hesitate to put my current horse through same op.
How old is your mare? And is she in good health otherwise?

my mare had it done in july last year she had to have most of the splint bone in that leg removed. she was in the vets for 1 week followed by 6 weeks box rest then 6 weeks field rest. she had have 3 weeks wortyh of antibiotic injection 2x daily when discharge from vets and dressings change every 3 days for about 1 month total bill of £4250 worth every penny. she has made a great recovery and is now back showjumping etc. no heat swelling nothing and she can stand in for days and it doesn't swell up. will post a few pictures post surgery if you like

you wouldn't even know she had had any problems now except slight blemish not seen to knacked eye. one tip i would give you is take your time with her after the surgery and don't rush to get back on her as you will benefit in long run as the leg need to heal insided as well as out side. good luck but im sure it will be fine

Thanks for posting the picciesTikino. I did think 2 weeks was fairly soon to be getting back on so i'll wait and see how she goes. I don't want to rush anything.

no probs and best of luck for you and you girlie. i would say nothing to worry about but you would still worry as i did. she will be as right as rain and you will be out having a ball before you know it.

ps keep me posted

My boy had this in July 07. The operation was absolutely fine, and he has no scarring or any ill effects, other than a bit of a lump. He was back in work within two months and has never been bothered by it since

. PM me if you want any more information!

Thank you guys, from your posts it sounds as though I have nothing to worry about, but like you say Tikino I'm always going to worry until its done and dusted

Exactly the same thing happened to my horse a month ago, she had the op 3 weeks ago, they did it under sedation and a local anaesthetic. She had two weeks box rest and is 1 week into the 6 weeks field rest the vet advised. The scar is only just over an inch long and was stapled, now that the staples are out I am sure that it won't scar but there will probably be a small lump there. The prognosis for full recovery is good and judging by the way she has cavorted round the field without any sign of lameness I am feeling much more confident than I was when it happened!

I have the piece of bone too - 3" off the bottom of the splint bone!

How big is the lump btw? Osk's was HUGE after the operation (like half a golf ball) but has reduced to half a pea after a year and a half of wearing magnetic wraps......

my friend's horse fractured a splint bone out hunting some months ago. The broken part was removed, he was nursed well, and he won a small unaffiliated horse trial this weekend and you wouldn't know it had happened.

i think it depends on how bad the splint bone is fractured etc to wether it can be done under sediation or general anasthetic. in rosie's case there wasn't an option but she got most of the splint bone removed

if she is having to thirds removed i would say they would need to give her a GA as they will need to chhizel it etc and if she moved they would risk damage to tendons and ligaments

Rosie had the op today. It all went well, and I've just been to see her. She was much more perky than I expected and was very happy to see me. They showed me pictures from the op

gruesome and I've got the bone
