Hi,

I have heard on the grapevine that there is a cream or gel avalaible to reduce the bone growth of a forming splint - is this true? If so, what is it called, where can I get it from and roughly what price is it? :D

I am currently using compagel.

Thanks

Yes there is ... my vet gave me some liquid solution (cant remember the name though) was about £15. Had to put it on twice a day with a tooth brush and massage in, makes the hair fall off after about a week and goes a bit scabby ... tbh it didnt make one bit of difference! its the exact same size a year later as it was when it first happened ... just my experience though

ETS ... had a wee search on the internet, this is the one my vet gave me

splintex is quite good, but i would suggest you let the horse down til formed, use the splintex or bone radiol (if still on the market) for about 4 weeks. it acts like a blister. and try not to work hard on hard ground, a lot of splints settle and reabsorb to much smaller splints in 12 to 18 months. how old is your horse?

Very old fashioned remedy - goose fat! You can get it in most supermarkets, but particularly around Christmas, which is not very helpful right now. It is amazing at reducing splints.

We were given compagel when splint got 3 months before we took gelding on had flared up and a little feely on it.

In 10 days it was fine but never given anything to reduce and it is quite big so might try the goose fat!!

Thanks all, I may try goose fat!

Ofcourseyoucan - My pony is just 7. He had a splint on each front leg when I got him last Oct but they had formed completely. Now he has got a new splint on his offside fore which is almost joined to the existing splint, giving a kind of double splint. It does look huge as his legs are only short! I am not riding him until it has formed (I've been told around 3 weeks?)

Another old remedy which works(in my experience) is unsalted butter - probably much the same as the goose fat.
