Splint near Knee joint?

Does anyone have a horse who has thrown a splint that interferes with the movement of the knee joint?
My horse has gone lame - I think it is an abcess but noticed last night he has a splint right under his knee on the same leg. I have never noticed this being there before but he might have always had it.
Vet is coming out today but just wondered if anyone had any experience of a splint being so close to the joint?

If it is a splint it should be towards the back of the cannon bone and i wouldn't have thought it would interfere with the knee movement, unless it was really huge and right at the top of the splint bone. I'd get the vet to have a quick look to put your mind at rest.
