My 15 yo cob threw a huge conker of a splint in the inside of his hindleg a year ago, it popped up literally over night and he wasnt lame on it but to be on the safe side I gave him a couple of weeks off and then brought him back into work again and he was fine but then he picked up a virus and for various other reasons he wasnt worked much last year so basically had the year off apart from the odd potter around. He has been completely out of work since october. I have now brought him back into work and he is really lame on that hind leg? He has lived out all winter and i have not seen him lame at all, although for the last couple of weeks I have noticed that when he was eating at his hay pile or grazing if he was resting a leg it was always the one with the splint? Could the splint be getting bigger and this is what is causing the lameness? He isnt too happy with me playing about with it anymore whereas before he didnt mind? He was also being a bit funny about lifting his leg to have his feet picked out? The vet is coming out tommorow to see my other horse so she is going to check him too.

any ideas????

He could have fractured that splint bone. Or it could be something unrelated to the splint completely. Fractured splint bones are relatively common and usually heal up nicely given time and treatment.
