Splint possibly?

So typically, put the BFG in the paper at the beginning of the week, that afternoon he went lame. He was noticed lame on the second trot (first one was all of about ten strides) and we came straight home at walk. That afternoon noticed slight swelling at the top of his leg, round the back. Turned him out as walking was helping. No change so he has been on box rest since yesterday. Now, I'm 999% sure he has popped up a brand new splint, I don't recall it being there before. And the swelling is right beside it. There is also a small, superficial scrape on the top of the lump (that I think is a splint).
He/s 10yr old so theoretically shouldn't get a splint. Could he have knocked himself and caused it? I am doing cold treatment and box rest for the moment as he can't go to the vet until tuesday and I think there is an improvement in his lameness/lump size.
Now, assuming its a splint. Cold treatment and box rest, is that the normal treatment or is it something else? And in terms of time to heal, two weeks?
Thanks.

Cold treatment and box rest is the best for a splint. Healing time: until the splint is cold and non-reactive (the horse doesn't flinch when you palpate it in other words), can be anything from a week to a few months. A knock can cause a splint to form at any age.

That's what I thought. It's slightly warm but non reactive to the touch (mind..he is built like a brick ***house and seems immune to the schooling whip as well so pain is debateable!)
Thank you.

I think my horse may have got splints I bandaged his legs last night removed them today and both front legs have got a largish lump both of which are warm to touch (warmer than normal) and he is a bit objective bout me touching them. What is treatment? Is it cold hosing? Also are splints permanent or do they go down depending on what treatment you use?

Thanks
