Has anyone got experience of splint removal surgery? After a kick my 4yr old has her off hind splint bone fractured into three pieces with a chip as well.

One of mine had surgery to remove part of his splint bone following a fracture, it was done standing under sedation rather than under a GA so far less risky, he recovered well and the wound healed quickly although he was on box rest for a fairly long time to allow it to fully recover, now you would not know he had part of it missing until you feel the leg, it was also his off hind.

I had another operated on many years ago, front leg with a very nasty open injury, he also recovered well although there was some scarring but he still passed a 5 stage vetting a couple of years later.

Thanks for a positive reply! I think they are going to remove the fragments leaving the top part near the hock alone. Do you know rough costs? I have asked for estimates. It will be 3 weeks from the injury when they operate will that make a difference?

My last one was not diagnosed properly, very long story which ended with me changing vets, so he was about 6 weeks post injury before he had the op which did mean the healing took longer but otherwise no problem, the other horse was in within about a week once the initial swelling went down and we realised it was not healing as expected so he was xrayed and sent in but from memory the post op care was much the same.

Cost for the more recent one was around £1k for the op as it was done standing so cheaper but the total bill maxed out the £5k insurance because of the mess the vet made in treating him initially.

That I should exactly what one of my horses had done .
Healed fine she had twelve weeks box rest and went on with life as though it had never happened .
The op was done at Edinburgh uni and it’s some time ago but the op was 1200 I remember that because it was less than what was done by my vet here xraying and one of those bandages that imobilse the leg completely to get the horse to Edinburgh and the bandaging afterwards at home .
I think you will very unlucky not to have a sound horse afterwards .

Ok thanks, mine was not diagnosed initially as well,I had to insist on them examining yesterday when they did the x ray.

The vet missed mine originally but my groom ( I was in Ireland at the time ) had seen minor break to a leg before and the horses behaviour made her think some thing was seriously wrong so she persuaded the vet to X-ray .
Your horse will need a GA that’s probaly the biggest risk .

Thanks for your replies. I am angry at the original misdiagnosis as I was told to leave her out and keep her walking. The cold hosing won't have done any harm but I really told her off for kicking out at me when I tried to treat the cut and I now know she was in great pain.
