Brought my nag in from the field today and he has a splint on the inside of his off fore. Its hard and it is not hot or tender.

Question is, now what do I do? I have been given conflicting advice. Some say I should box rest with walk out only and some say I can continue walk and trot work in the school (which would be preferable).

So, opinions?

Is always very confusing when splints are concerned,

when my boy had one on one leg I was told to keep walking him and a little trotting on a good surface, and all was fine.

A few months later he threw another one on the other leg ( I was then On a different yard) and I was advised to box rest him, they didnt have a great surface, so no where to really exercise him, so I box rested him, and walked him out in hand daily, and have to say recovery time was about the same in both cases

I didnt notice Moon had thrown one in January (bad mummy, I know, I know) and she carried on in full work with no problems and it's still only tiny plus has not caused her a moments bother.
My advice is to monitor it but work as normal if everything stays cold and he's sound

Thanks both of you! I could kiss you both! Just the type of advice I wanted to hear!!!!
I bandaged to work but he has been going out without boots, would you reccomend i use them during turnout too?

Agreed! So long as there is no tenderness just get on with life per usual. And do NOT sob, it is just the leg strengthening

My horse got a big one when I first bought him, I was gutted. He was only four had just had shoes put on and had knocked himself in the field. I carried on as normal work wise but for the next few months turned out with boots on until he settled. What was a big splint is hardly noticable now. It took a about 12 mths but it really went down and touch wood caused no problems.

My horse has two of the biggest splints you have ever seen. He was sound when he threw the first one so vet advised to carry on and work him. With the second he became slightly insound so i out him on box rest with walking excercise only for a fortnight and then just worked him on a soft serface for another few weeks and he was fine. They look very unsightly but I dont get a days trouble with them now, good luck!!

My 5 yr old horse now has a whopper which started out tiny (but hot and reactive), and made him unsound for nearly a month. He's fully sound now but the (cold and formed) splint is quite big and looks a state. The vet said once he's sound ignore it, it will probably be reabsorbed or go down in a while. Very common in young horses who have recently started proper work. Weezy is right - it is the bones having to get stronger quickly. If you are worried, cold hose a few times a day. You could also try Splintex, which works for some horses but does absolutely nothing for others.

I sent my 3.5 year old away to be backed and he came back with a walnut size splint. I turned him away. It is now the size of a hazel nut. He has always been sound. As he is only 4 he shall be turned away until the winter and I can carry on with another 4 year old. I have know splints to dissapear after a year on older animal.

One of my sisters ponies got a splint and she put a piece of lemon on it and bandaged it up for 12 hours and it didnt half go down (if you do this bandage the other leg because of swelling)

Also i would try like ice thats good xx

Hope i have helped xx

Archie has a splint, had it when i brought him. His owner told me he'd never been lame on it and she had carried on riding him as normal.

Not much help really, however if hes not lame id just carry on with normal work, but on a surface, not on hard ground.

Well, he wasnt lame on it, so i thought. But yesterday i wasnt so sure. Was going to try the lemon bandage thing but then realised that he takes great pleasure in taking off his bandages! So ive just turned him out where he will stay for a week.

I've used the lemon trick on Asti on a splint from a kick and got rid... Ivy has 2 from belting round the field but you can't do the lemon bandaging on her, the little b*gger eats the slices! As in ges the bandage out of the way and scoffs the lemon!
