A month ago today I noticed what I thought was a new splint on my mares foreleg. I saw new, because she already has an old splint on each leg. Its on the inside of her foreleg, on what I call the splint bone directly below the old one.

However. A month on, its no better. Its still quite warm and a bit puffy. The ones she threw last year were like golf balls at the start but went down quite quickly, in comparison this is fairly flat and feels much softer.

She's not lame in the slightest, but she wasn't a month ago either, and wasn't last year either. I haven't ridden since I found it but she's been out in the field 24/7.

I'm starting to wonder if its not a splint at all but something else. Any thoughts?

When my horse threw splints in each foreleg i put him on box rest for 6 weeks each time - he was lame in one and not in the other looking at them now you wouldnt know he had had them - Have you had a vet look at them ? Does she get active in the field ?

I haven't had the vet out but that will be the next step if it doesn't improve. She's in quite a settled herd and doesn't run around the field much any more, and we've had a lot of rain so the ground is fairly soft now as well. There just doesn't seem to be any improvement at all

My horse knocked himself in the field as a 4 yr old and ended up with a large splint, I was gutted. He hadnt had shoes on for long and he must have banged himself as it was also cut. It took forever to go down probably a year! He was never lame and I just kept my eye on it and put boots on for turnout for a while. I remember it being hot and squishy at first, then turned to a flat longish lump. Its a hard flattish splint now, hes 10 but touch wood it hasnt caused him any problems.

You say it took a year to go down - was it hot and squishy for all (or most) of that time?

In that case it might just be a normal splint...

Gosh its a long time ago now but I remember it definately got bigger before it settled down as I was mortified. It stood out a mile. I dont think its stayed squishy for long as it was definately a hard lump when it got bigger. It was a real eyesore and I was so relieved when it settled down. If he had been lame I would have def got the vet but he wasnt so I didnt worry too much.

Global herbs do product to help splints,Havent used it but someone on h and h might have tried could be worth asking
