Ok, so after 4 days box rest the big horse is sound (had one bute yesterday so it shouldn't be hiding any lameness now?) . How long would you wait before working him/turning him out?
dont turn him out if hes like most horses and tear up the field!! lol this will only make his splint bigger - i shud know, my old pony had the biggest one the vet had ever seen!! lol
wait till the splint is up properly and there is no heat at all on it, and its not sore when you press it. dont rush the riding, as you dont want to have a lame horse all over winter! we usually give them a month off and if theres no improvement after that then they get another month. but at least its comming into winter so you wont miss any events!
Have been in a similar situatuion recently. Was told by vet and instructor once sound to return to working, but use boots to protect it, and play it by ear and be sensible with what you do, eg no galloping on hard ground/excessive concusive work. Keep cold hosing when possible. I would personally turn out as soon as horse is sound. Otherwise is more likely to go mad as time goes on and cause even more grief!!
Its not sore to touch, he is 100% sound tonight. It was never 'vet' diagnosed, but it is identical to any splints the others have, and has a small scrape on it, do it's assumed a splint, thanks for the boot idea. He was entered for an event tomorrow, decided not a good idea even if sound!
He shouldn't go mad, as has been kept in a pen during the day in an attempt to keep him sane (needn't have worried..he's a 'bob' in nature! (quiet!) so if let out with a sensible companion should be ok.
Thanks for the advice, did anyone get a small amount of localised swelling when the splint came up.
By the sounds of things his has been caused by him knocking himself, which would explain the swelling around it. The stage it is at now, very little will change tbh other than it decreasing in time. So going about things as normal shouldnt cause any probs, but just pay by ear and listen to what they tell you. If it hurts, they will go lame!! Obviously thats not something you want to happen, but once at the stage it is, realistically if it will cause probs (unlikely now) could do at any time.
Thanks, reassured now (we put his advert in on tuesday..he went lame that afternoon...not insured and never seen the vet, recipe for disaster!) Glad you ha a good day on your coloured today, I remember the first time I spoke to you, he was basically doing nothing and now look at him go!
