Has anyone got any advice on splints causing issues in older horses?

My 12yo's splint has recently started to cause inflammation of his check ligament during and after exercise. He has had the splint which is relatively small, i.e. You cannot see it just looking at his leg, since I purchased him 6 years ago and never previously had any issues.

His only job is hunting, we have being doing walk work for the last month as fittening work, do not been hammering him on hard ground. The splint seems to only be causing very slight lameness since we have started trot work.

We are now back just walking gently (in which he is completely sound) and cold hosing and ice tighting the leg after exercise.

Has anyone had anything similar? Or have any ideas on treating this? Everything I find online or in books is based on splints in the young horse. Should I be concerned about the check ligament and get it checked?

Thanks in advance

Well if he's lame then you need to get it checked out. He may well have knocked himself around the splint area and splints can cause inflammation of various ligaments depending where they sit. So yes, get the vet. In the meantime I would keep icing it.
