My 7 year old Arab mare was away on loan and developed matching splints on both front legs last year or so, she is not lame and I don't think she ever was lame on them, however she is now back with me and still has them and I have been googling to try to find out if they'll ever just go away by themselves as I know they often do, however I have only ever had one horse in the past with one splint and that did go. How long can they hang around for?

One of mine got one when she was about 18 months old, quite a large one, it went away on it's own but I can't remember if it was the following year of the year after.

They do usually reabsorb over time, I used splintex - although whetehr this made any difference I don't know...

But it was a massive splint, and it did gradually go down over a year.

You need to check the cause though, if the foot for example isn't balanced correctly, and that caused it, then it won't go.

My mare fell over in an empty stable and threw a substantial splint as a result, although she was never lame. Many months later I was grooming her and realised it was completely gone. I was amazed as I thought it was a permanent fixture.
