My mare formed splints on both front legs last year after larking around in the field. She was not lame in the slightest, but there was a small amount of heat in the legs and so until the heat went, I didnt ride her at all. In total, she had 3 weeks off, and I spent 20 mins a day cold hosing each splint. She now has only a tiny bump on each leg - you can feel it but not see it - and it hasnt affected her at all.
One of my youngsters has also had a splint come up overnight not lame but unfortunatley are now stuck with it, it may settle down over time but will still be a splint.
I dont think people bother to much about splints now, well least most have said that, unless its a showing horse I expect.
Mine has two, cant really tell and theyve got smaller as hes got older. Im sure there was a gel or paste you could put on them? in the early stages, whether it works or not is another matter
splintex i think but as said no idea what they do or if it works.
My horse has a small splint, he was very slightly lame for a few days when it formed but now he's fine and unaffected by it. When I had the vet out for something else she said that it would probably go within six months and it's definitely getting smaller so hopefully it won't be there much longer. I don't think they're much of a cause for concern unless they continue to get bigger and lead to other problems.
