Splints

For showing top level yes you wouldn't do so well however I have a six year old irish tb with quite a large splint and he hasn't had any issues..touch wood! Iv'e had a few horses with splints, no bother x

I would also be worried if they were quite large (I would worry they would be more likely to get fractured), or looked like there were in such a position as to be likely to affect the tendon, or if the horse was quite young. If none of those, and you aren't looking at higher level showing then I don't think they would bother me overly. I would however have a good look at the conformation of the horse to see if that might have been a contributing factor to the formation of the splints. The conformation would be more likely to put me off than the splints.

I'm looking at a horse who has a splint, he's 9.
Conformation is pretty good, not perfect (If there is such a thing!) but then I'm not looking ot pay a lot for him. I'm just wanting him for a bit of everything as I just have a youngster.
Thanks guys :)

Yep, I called the current owners vet yesterday, no problems according to him, trying him again tonight if all goes well I will go ahead and get a vetting.

Hoping this horse works out (I seem to attract the nutters!)

My last horse had splints on both front legs and passed a 5 stage vetting when I bought him and when I sold him on. He never had any problems with them but I'm sure my vet something about the closer to the top of the bone they are the more prone they are to problems

Hmmm... not to sure on the fracture comment as it isnt anything to do with the main cannon bone but an inflammation of the ligament with casues calcification at first most splints settle down with time. my old endurance mare threw a whopper and I mean huge like the size of a plum on the inside of her leg, no heat, lameness, rested her for a couple of weeks. Then after vets seeing her and saying no problems she competed her first endurance season, the lump is now nearly no existant, 7 years after it threw. She has competed to a good level in endurance, jumped open tracks, etc.
So no would never have a problem unless there was lameness or excess heat, or if i wanted it for high level showing, having said this I saw at a county show this year a lovely cob win its class with a leg full of them, so jsut down to judges i suppose.

I heard they can cause issues the closer they are to the knee, I remember this because my horse’s is next to his knee, he was unsound on it for a while but not seriously so, never in walk and it would usually trot off after a few strides, he’s sound on it now and there’s no heat, it’s not actually that big a splint, less than the size of a10p

A splint wouldnt bother me so long as it wasnt huge.

To cut a long story short, my horse came to me for schooling and to be sold. On the day of the vetting she threw a small splint and failed the vetting as she was ever so slightly stiff. I ended up buying her and she has never been lame in the 8 years I have had her.
We also had a year where nearly all the horses on the yard threw splints as the ground was so hard. None of them ever had a problem.

If you like the horse then dont let a splint put you off.
