Hey all,

My youngster went a tad mad on when I attempted to long rein yesterday! Think he is full of rather good grass and too much going on around him
Anyway, came to him this evening and he has what seems like the start of a splint directly under his knee.
How is the best way to deal with them? I've never had to deal with one before! Just to add Vet is out on Friday for vaccs so will get it checked then but Sailor is in no pain, not lame or heated.

Thanks for help in advance!
Glass of rosé for those who help :D

I looked into this the other day as a friend recently purchased a 6 year old pony who after light work but hurtling around the field like a maniac came in with splints on 3 legs  anyway, what I found out for her was the following:

Vet can give steroids
Cider Vinegar: stops and breaks down the calcification of the bone
B-R Bone: flattens the splint
Magnetic Boots: helps improve blood flow, relieve aches and generally promotes healing
Cold hosing: 10 mins min x2/3 times a day.

Would love any more suggestions too :)

My 3 yr old got a huge splint last year,

He had cold hosing, DMSO and magnetic therapy. Nothing made it even slightly reduce in size. He had it surgically removed 3 weeks ago and all is well, can't even tell they've cut his leg open! I've heard amazing things about it, it will take 2 months to all go down back to normal.

My last boy got a splint right below his knee. Vet said that because it was so close to the knee, it could go into the knee joint and make him permanently lame. He went on 8 weeks box rest, 1 week of bute and anti inflams then we applied some liquid rubbish which was suppose to help it heal but done nothing, it was rubbish!! Luckly he came back sound and it never affected him.

When my pony threw a plint the vet told me to give her bute once a day and as soon as she was sound to start working her again because the movement encourages the blood circulation and helps heal. This was 2 years ago and she has never been lame since.

Hi Chelle

I don't know how true this is, but I was told to massage olive oil into it once a day.....strangely it's the one thing Blue hasn't had yet - that'll be next on her journey to ultimate destruction!!

Haha bless her :p

It's not causing any issues at all for him, he's not lame with it so not overly worried! Just want to get rid of it :o

What's BR bone ?

My boy got a splint about half an inch bellow his knee on the inside of his canon. Vet said not to worry as he didn't go lame. I didn't cold hose as it was -8 at the time, so it seemed a bit pointless. 6 months ago now I occasionally look and think it's going down, then again I look and think it's not!
