Hi,
I was just wondering how many people have had a young horse with splints, and as horse has got older the splints have gone.
Many thanks ?

Yes mine had a tiny splint when I bought him as a rising 7 year old, it’s now nowhere to be found as a 17 year old. Pretty sure it vanished within a year or two but it was a very minor one.

My lad had a field accident as a yearling and popped a sizeable splint and a bog spavin. The splint can only just be felt and certainly not seen and the bog spavin completely resolved itself.

I bought a yearling with clean legs and as a two year old he nuttered around on hard ground and threw one that was golf ball sized.
He's now 6 and it's still there but you have to feel for it and maybe 1/3 size it was

Thanks all, I’ve got a 3 year old and he popped a splint end of May because he was being a silly boy in field on the hard ground.
I got him for showing now feeling down about it .

Depending on your budget maybe speak to your vet, caught early there's all sorts of clever stuff they can do to shrink them.

Mine was a riding club horse with me forever so I didn't follow up on any cosmetic treatment, but your situation is different

Mine popped a sizeabe splint as a 4 year old (messing about in the field), can't really see it now at 10.
However, as above, if you are showing, have a talk to your vet and definitely take it slow.

One of ours threw an absolute whopper overnight in the field, it was the size of an egg I’ve never seen one so big. We used this - https://www.evetdrug.co.uk/dispensary/pain-relief/audevard-ekyflogyl-gel . Really does work I’ve used it on a couple now. Never ever had one thrown through work, always in the field. My mare had two as a 4 year old and they are tiny now, you can’t see them and can only just feel them

Thanks- we did get vet out to X-ray & he injected the around the splint at the time, have the vet coming soon so I’ll ask him if there is anything else we can try.

What age did they start to go can you remember? ?
I honestly can't remember, but I think he would have been about 9 - 10 yrs old. This thread prompted me to go and have a 'feel' of his forelegs, and - I have to be honest - I did detect a very slight bump on one of them. Completely invisible to the eye, but very, very slight.
