Hi,

Can anyone give me any info on these, can a horse with a splint still be ridden (usually) I know someone with a horse who has arthritus and a splint and she is not ridden any more, could she be?

Splints can make them lame when the splint is forming, normally 4-6 weeks, and the area will be warm.

Once they're formed they are of no consequence at all unless they are so close the the knee that they affect it's function, or they press on the suspensory ligament.

Could she have meant a spavin? This is a type of arthritis and can mean the horse can't be ridden.

Horses with splints can of course still be ridden! Most 10 year olds + have them (from what I was told). As long as it isn't too close to any joints it won't cause a problem. Ali has a splint on the inside of one of his forelegs, but he passed that stage of the vetting with flying colours, and the vet said it won't affect him at all.

A horse on my yard has had 3 months on box rest now purely due to a splint - hes just started walking in hand. (Hes been x rayed etc and it all came up fine).

Archie has two splints, and neither of them made him lame - i carried on riding him as normal, but didnt turn him out for a week and made sure i only rode him in the arena.
