I admit I don't know a lot about splints lol ,, as some of you know I bought Rosie from Ascot sales, she had a splint on the outside of her left fore it was quite large and the groom said it formed about 18 months ago.. (when I had her vetted vet did not think it was that old cos she flinched when he touched it, didn't flinch with me or my mates just the vet and she seemed to flinch at everything he did cos she was nervous) I have had he eight weeks now and to me the splint has almost halfed in size, when you look at her from the front it doesn't show, is this normal on a splint that is supposedly old? would putting DMSO on it help it to shrink further or should I just leave it alone and see what happens?

Any tips grateful

Old splints don't tend to change, nor are they painful. But it's good news if it is a new one as there's more chance it will keep reducing.
Don't work her on hard ground, though for a while.

How old is "old" though? I have known a horse with a splint that reduced after a year or so, only slightly but still noticeably. I was always under the impression before that though that once they had formed and calcified, that was it. If I were you I would leave it and see if it reduced any more, and as Shilasdair said don't work on hard ground for a while.
Not to steal your thread zigzag, but you mentioned the splint was on the outside - I was wondering if anyone knew if lateral splints were "normal"? I thought splints usually formed on the inside of the leg (my horse has matching lateral splints).

there is an old wives tale for getting rid of new splints:

do fast work on hard ground/trot on roads and it will get rid of the splint

wanna try it?

I had only seen splints on the inside of the leg and when I saw Rosie with one on her outside of leg I rang my vet to ask him if it was ok, he said it be fine and was common

not sure but i dont want to try it! lol

my pony has a splint on the inside of his foreleg and he was never lame (touch wood) on it!!!!

DSMO works well as well as kaolin (poltice stuff) but isnt DSMO meant to be banned?

I just thought it was strange as my horse looks very straight-legged from in front, and I wouldn't imagine she put more stress on either splint bone let alone more on the outside than the inside. Just wondered if it was a common thing but sounds like your vet thinks it is!

NOTE TO ALL MEMBERS

THE WIVES TALE MAY NOT WORK AND COULD MAKE IT WORSE!!

that shud stop any novices trying it! (hoping not all gullible

Well when I saw it I wasn't sure if it was a splint

never ever seen one on outside of leg, in fact it isn't even just below the knee like most splints (not that I have seen loads!) I have seen but exactly halfway down cannon bone, will take a pic tomorrow of it

Well as long as it's along a splint bone (they run to about half- 2/3rds of the way down the cannon bone) then they can get them anywhere there. I think there are just "more" and "less" common places for them to get them as there are certain places that take more concussion. I think my horse's are half way down too (both are exactly the same in position and size, but one is about six months old and one is at least a year as she had it when I got her last year). At least I know my horse walks evenly with her front legs!

Lol so should I worry she only has it on one leg?

lol no! I wish my horse still only had the one and not the one she got with me... but then that's the least of her problems, I wish she still had in-tact tendons and not a holey one! I don't think I'm very good for my horse...!!
